Can I just go out on my property and shoot?  Safely of course.

I know people that do so in Waianae.  I imagine a lot would depend on the neighbors.  Here on the Big Island, I shoot on my 3 acre property regularly and hear couple of my other neighbors doing so too.  No one around here really cares.  On the other hand, I have a friend who has 50 acres and if he did shoot, I am sure neighbors would complain.  The difference is where I live  the properties are full of trees and you can't see your neighbors.  Where he lives is all pasture land and you can easily see your neighbors.  Like they say in the real estate business, Location, Location, Location.

That's why we need suppressors, so we don't disturb our neighbors. OTOH, you could always build a subterranean gun range.

Wasn't there an article about the guy on the windward side who shoots on his private property and the neighbors are "so fearful and lock their children inside" because its the end of the world happening?

I’ve shot at a ranch in Hauula many times. They are respectful and considerate of their neighbors and I believe that is key. I don’t know for sure, but beleive it’s legal based on land designation. IIRC, a friend on Kauai built a range on his propert and I think it was ok because it was Ag, or at least not residential. But don’t quote me on that.

In any case, I believe getting along with your neighbors and community (including LE) is key for situations like that to work for everyone. Can’t be an abrasive person that thinks “I do what I like on my property”.  At least IMHO.

Our area is zoned AG. I keep my shooting sessions short.  50 rds or 15 min, but I might do it couple times a day.  No big deal as I just walk out to the backyard.  I did hear someone shooting for about an hour and fire couple hundred rds or more.

Even a 22 is pretty loud.

Should not be zoned Residential.  Should not be fired in a direction of a road or any thoroughfare that is commonly accessible by the public, even if on or through private lands.  As mentioned, location is key, noise, and projectiles not leaving the property.  So staying within best practices of a standard range is a good idea, such as berms and safety zones or lands "downrange" from the berm.   Legal to shoot or not, neighbors are a huge part of the equation. 

Suppressors would help with noise....

I've shot on ranch land on the NS a couple of times. No restrictions as long as you were safe.

General consensus seems to be that shooting on your own property is not illegal. However, there are possible consequences despite that.

It seems to me that the last time this rolled around, someone found an actual ordinance about discharging in the city limits, but I didn't come across it on the forum search.
