The link says Ahukini St.and Kalama Valley.  As I stated above I find it hard to believe that Kalama Valley is affected through a ND as it has to be an extreme angle and with a rifle.  It's asking a lot to do with a pistol round.  Ahukini Street I can see with a pistol or rifle round, but again the angle is extreme and not something easily done.  In either case I think the guy with the ND would be very easy to determine by those around him due to the extreme angle needing to clear the crater rim as well as get enough elevation to meet the street in question (along with the angle of aim).

The Kalama Valley issue is even worse as you need to clear the best part of the mountain to get to the Valley.

Just go to Google maps and plug in "Ahukini Street" and "Kalama Valley" and you'll see what I'm talking about.  Run the satellite view and you can see the bays in question and how unlikely it would be that a ND would not be noticed.

Wow.  Not sure if I was using the graphic scale on google maps accurately, but Ahukini St is about 4000 feet away from the far end of what looks like the rifle range.  You'd have to be shooting pretty crooked too!  I'm not saying that it's impossible, but you would have to be shooting at quite a noticable angle (just as Gzire said).  I could see houses in the subdivision closer to Kalanianaole Hwy being affected as they are closer, but none of the ranges face that direction.

I've seen some ranges on the mainland where they have to shoot through a port that restricts how high you can raise the muzzle.  I assume that is why the pistol range has those slats in front of the tables.  There sure are a lot of holes in those slats too.

Will be interesting what (hopefully nothing) comes from this.

Can anyone attend these meetings or is it restricted to residents of those districts?

Community/neighborhood board meetings are always open to the public.

   That's a riot!  (Sort of like trying to build something on an ant pile, while staying away from the ants.)

Don't know why thats funny...go north of Pearl City, past Waipio and Mililani then into the heart of the island and you'll get the same ideas. There are a lot of areas that meet the criteria: Launani valley (east of Mililani Mauka), the area west of Kunia camp, or somewhere by Whitmore/north of the Ewa Forest Reserve come to mind. All central locations, (mostly) state owned, and far enough away for anti-gun folk to STFU. I'd have added something between Wahiawa and Haleiwa, but it's too flat and a "magical" bullet might be found 5 miles away lodged in someones surf board.

Ignorance exists in every neighborhood...A range in central Oahu would encounter the same problem of "phantom bullets" landing where they shouldn't. The best thing would be something miles away from residential areas that uses the Koolau or Waianae mountain range as a backstop.

I meant in terms of distance for people to travel.

Well then the places mentioned in my previous post would serve a dual purpose: 1) away from people who might complain and 2) more centrally located (distance-wise) for all residents.

http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/18673359/city-investigates-claims-that-shooting-range-bullets-are-ending-up-in-neighborhoods

So I saw the story on the morning news.  Unfortunately there is no dimensioning of the bullet in question.  From what I briefly saw the bullet is a rifle bullet of larger caliber, say at least 30 cal or larger (see 55sec of the video embedded in HNN link).

Using this;
http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-google-maps-distance-calculator.htm

The closest distance from the rifle bays to Kaeleku Street is approximately 10,400 ft, or nearly 2 miles!!!  I can't help but think that if this is from the range, then the shooter is extremely negligent or it's purposeful.  If you guys look at Google maps you can see how the line from the rifle bays to Kaeleku St. is pretty much over the tallest section of the mount.  I feel it's almost impossible to shoot at that elevation without it being purposeful or extremely negligent due to the angle.  Also, I feel it would be impossible for someone not to have noticed such a shot due to the required elevation to clear the mount.

The brow over the benches is a good idea, but reasonably speaking I think if you take into consideration the elevation of the muzzle necessary to clear the mount and get to Kaeleku St, you would need to put a bullet through the roof of the structure.........well behind a brow.

City investigates claims of shooting range bullets ending up in neighborhoods

Honolulu city officials are looking at making some safety improvements at the Koko Head rifle range after claims that bullets have been found in neighborhoods in the area.

The most recent incident happened a few months ago after some heavy rains on Kaeleku Street. "On March 12, I found a bullet that kind of washed up on a trail behind my house," said resident Greg Knudsen, "and it was just sitting there on the trail, and where else could it come from?"

Knudsen thinks it came from the rifle range, which is on the other side of Koko head from his home. He wrote to the head of the city's Parks and Recreation Department about his concerns. In the letter, he also mentioned another incident in March of 2010, when he says a bullet went past him while he and his brother were climbing Koko Crater.

"I'm not saying it's the same bullet, but I'm saying that it's very possible that there are stray bullets that occasionally go over that rim," Knudsen said.

"It was hard to determine the age of the bullet, if it actually came from the range, but if it walks like duck and quacks like a duck, it is a duck," said parks and recreation director Gary Cabato. "Proximity says the likely culprit is the range."

Knudsen happens to be the chairman of the Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board. He said his discovery, coupled with earlier discoveries of bullets on rooftops along Ahukini Street in 2009, have reopened the discussion about safety at the range. Knudsen claims the city hasn't followed safety recommendations that were made in a 2001 master plan report.

"There's just that 2001 report, but previous ones had also addressed many of those concerns," said Knudsen. "So it's been long standing, and for the most part, ignored."

Cabato said the city is responding to the latest claims. It sent a safety inspector to the range, and also received new recommendations from range master Mike Muramoto. The most immediate plan is to  increase the size of berms behind targets, using rock-free soil to prevent bullets ricocheting. And Cabato wants to install a so-called "eyebrow" over the shooting area. "All it is, is a lip overhead of the rifle range to keep people from aiming up over the target range. And this way anything that's shot is going to go right back down," he said.

Both men are in favor of proposals to build another rifle range in Kalaeloa in West Oahu. And neither man wants to close the current Koko Head facility. Knudsen wants to increase safety measures.

"The residential area surrounds it. Lots of recreational areas surround it. So we need to make sure that it's safe," Knudsen said.

Knudsen also said while there are no firm dates set, the neighborhood board's parks committee plans to revisit the matter in the near future.

I have some modelling software (Sierra's Infinity program).  I don't know if I can model it to figure what it'd be like to try and clear the crater and the mound to get to Kaeleku Street.....................but might be worth the try.

Doubt it.  :P

Seriously doubtful that a ricochet would fly that far over the mountain.  But who knows. Sh!t can happen.  Hope this doesn't cause some kind of silly outcry from misinformed citizens.

I have heard that the hike is illegal.

Looks old to me.  plus if it was a ricochet it would be damaged.  could have been fired from up above, who knows.

I saw the news report.  It seemed slanted as usual.  if it did go over the mountain then someone would have had to have the gun more than 60 degrees in the air.

Looks like a 308 diameter

My theory is that bullet came from a Japanese Zero's strafing run, and I'm sticking to it.
