Advice for buying safe
« on: December 04, 2019, 09:35:42 PM »
Hello all. I've been looking to get my hands on a long arm for ownership but I want to be responsible and get a safe first. The main option I see is ordering online but I was wondering if there were any other options for getting a safe on island first (I don't want to pay another 30% on shipping if I don't have to). I was wondering what experience people here have had in purchasing gun safes recently, are there any stores or chains here on island (O'ahu) that sell reliable and sensibly priced gun safes or should I bite the bullet and ship one in from the mainland? Any advice is appreciated, thanks!  :shaka:

If the local stores have one on the sales floor, it may be a return, or they may have ordered a few for a sale.  If you see one, and you like it, best to just go ahead and get it before it's gone.

Costco has several listed on their website marked down $200 or more.  That'll cover a big portion of the shipping cost.

I bought the 19 cu/ft Bighorn from Costco in 2013.  I think it was $250 off then, same as now.  My daughter paid the shipping as a birthday gift .

Shipping prices vary from time to time.  I just ran that safe through the cart, and shipping is $487.20.   :shake:

Of course, the safe's price has also gone up since I bought it.  Right now, it's $649.99 after the $250 discount.  I paid $569.99 and shipping was $319.71.  Add tax, and it was $931.62 delivered to the house.

The current price is good through 12/15.  They obviously put their safes on sale all year.  It's just a matter of whether the price increases, shipping goes up, and/or which brand and model is on sale at any given time.

Buy the most expensive one that you can afford.  Bolt it to the ground if you can.  Costco usually has one.  Or gun stores may have it cheaper compared to ordering it yourself with shipping.  Once in a while you can find a cheap used one on Craigslist and the classifieds.

Amazon does free ship some of the lighter quick access safes if you're using it for self defense.  Like this one.  https://www.amazon.com/Hornady-98190-RAPiD-Rifle-Gunlocker/dp/B06XG4YVH2/ref=mp_s_a_1_14?dchild=1&keywords=rifle+safe+quick&qid=1575562736&sr=8-14

Get a larger safe than you "think" you'll need.  At least that's very true in my case and something I hear quite often.  The stated capacity is often optimistic.  Especially if you have long guns with optics or pistol grips.  My rifle with LPVO takes up almost three spots  :(

In my case, my collection expanded quite a bit from when I first got my safe.  Then again, I could build myself a walk-in gun closet and I'd just fill it up.

True.  Not so much that you must have expansion space, even though it's a valid consideration, but a ##-gun safe could be based on ## mid-size traditional rifles with no form of optic.  AR's and optics take more space.  The AR style receiver is not as rectangular as most traditional rifles.  Pistol grips, protruding mag well, tall sights, etc. take up lots of space they intended to be for a standard shotgun or hunting rifle without optics.

I made a shelf for my ARs and bullpup shotty so I can make use of the space they don't take up vertically.  Longer guns are to either side of the shelf.

Also, the organization features most sellers add don't keep the rifles from knocking around, falling, and so on.  I use rifle rods that not only keep each gun in place, but uses the center of the safe to is maximum capacity.  I had to remove the shelves and rifle niches along the wall to make the safe actually hold the stated capacity (plus).

I always cut the "capacity" in half to judge if it is big enough

Yep, capacity numbers are grossly exaggerated.
I would definitely prefer a mechanical lock.

And of course you mean when you recommend safes to "a friends".  O0

Hypothetical right ?  IF you had a rifle with a LVPO since you don't own any firearms, ammo, reloading equipment, or body armor.

JHara had a decent stack on safe last time I was there.

Home Depot can order you a safe if they don't have it in stock, but it comes by boat.  So when ever their next shipment of stuff is.  Maybe 2 weeks, maybe 2 months.  You have to pay for it up front, but can get a refund for what ever reason once it arrives in store.

Costco and Sams has safes on a regular basis, but not all the time.

I got mine from Bass Pro/Cabelas.  1 day the shipping cost more than the safe.  I just so happen to check the next day and shipping was only $30.  So I ordered it and sure enough, only $30 shipping.  Got lucky I guess.

The other stores that have safes are the ones that cost like $2,000+.  For 1 rifle, that's overkill.  No need fire rated, and 800lbs.  But up to you.  You can always upgrade later.  I'm looking for a bigger one soon because the collection of guns is growing...hypothetically growing.

Check Senetics out in Iwilei or Security Equipment on Young St which usually has them in stock. Was just there on Mon and they also had the Snap Safe under the bed safes on sale for 20% off
