Nobody made them buy at retail.  Dealers buy with the intention to resell.  They would not have purchased at retail if they didn't count on being able to make a profit selling at even higher prices due to panic buying.

Whether it fits your definition of price gouging or not, it's still taking advantage of the pandemic to make a buck -- i.e. profiteering.  A distinction without a difference.

I would have to disagree. If I owned a gun show and a customer came in saying he wanted a particular gun but I couldn't get it at wholesale price then I would tell my customer I have to buy it at retail and charge him accordingly for my time and expense. If they are hiding the reason why it is so expensive then it is dishonest but if they did buy it at wholesale and inform the customer then it is the customer's decision. Raising prices just because you can in a panic is not respectable but if they are only adding the usual markup to their products and just the initial cost is more because they couldn't get it at wholesale then that's just regular business.

If you were an HONEST gun show owner (assuming you meant exhibitor, not the owner of the show), you would tell the prospective buyer the name of the company/person who has that weapon, since you obvious already know it's available.

Inserting yourself as the middle man just to make your little "time and expense" upcharge is not part of any business plan.  It's an opportunistic tactic to take someone's money without providing a single bit of benefit or increased value.

You're basically saying, "Bud's Guns has that for $500 with shipping.  Pay me that, plus my transfer fee and overhead, and I'll get it for you for $580."

It's profiteering.  Nobody can argue it's not.

Profiteer:  make or seek to make an excessive or unfair profit.

I saw the same gun on various sites and ranged from $350-500ish and like over a dozen of them available.

If they paid retail, then they got ripped off. Gun stores dont pay retail for guns.

That's ridiculous.  I've been told by FAIR and HONEST gun shops, if they cannot get it from their distributors, then go order it on gunbroker or wherever you can get a good deal, and they'll do the FFL stuff for me.   Making like they purchase at retail is dishonest.

I don't shop there or ever plan to but it is a free market. They can price what ever they want.

Or plain stupid, also to think people would believe such a story.

It was just the rumor I had heard. Not saying it was true or not.

I was talking to someone recently and the supposed story was that X-Ring bought the guns at retail price somewhere else so the markup was necessary for them to make some profit and not really price gouging. Haven't confirmed the story but something to consider.

Suppose that the person who told you this did so deliberately because they knew that you’d repeat it in a public forum and get yourself in trouble?  I’d advise you to avoid that side of the exhibition hall in the fall.  I’m no attorney but writing false things about a business is libelous especially of they have records that demonstrate otherwise.

False.

I clearly stated that it was something I had heard and didn't know if it was true. Mentioning the existence of a rumor for discussion is not the same as spreading a rumor.
