News articles that use the passive voice throughout are frustrating. The writers are (1) poorly educated in proper writing, and/or (2) trying to gloss over the details.
"MPD and ATF said in a news release that ATF Special Agent John Bost III died July 28 at the Kihei Division office
after being wounded by a rifle that was accidentally discharged".
Notice he was wounded BY A RIFLE. The rifle was obviously able to discharge itself, since the writer failed to make this an active sentence, such as "another officer accidentally discharged the rifle..."
The closest they come to reporting he died at the hands of another is using the word "Shooting" in the title, excluding the expected "self-inflicted" description, and saying "after being accidentally shot", which implies that being shot requires someone else to do the shooting.
Real journalism is dead. This kind of writing reminds me of the censors in
Good Morning, Vietnam! with Robin Williams. Narrative is everything. Truth? Meh.
