Hvybarrel - A while back Mitch the ro mentioned there was a bunch of fire hose by the ro’s station but I didn’t grab any at the time. I assume it’s all gone by now.
I heard of using inner tubes but I don’t have any.
Raudi - how much are those straps?
Flapp - that’s an interesting method. I may try that.
What are you folks using for the cross bar? 2x4? Or 1” emt conduit?
I have an old set up using a 2x4 as the cross bar and chains to hold the gongs....I haven’t used it in a while. I’m thinking using an emt cross bar and the hangers will make set up and take down easier at the range
I use a regular KHSC-designed rifle target frame. 2"x2" lumber with both paper and steel hanging on it.
Make sure to attach the chain/hose/inner tube to the FRONT SIDE of the frame. If using wood, you want the target to be in front of the frame so the splatter of bullet fragments deflect before reaching the frame. If you make the targets hang in the center or behind the frame, the splatter will destroy the frame relatively quickly. I put the horizontal cross piece at the top in front to push the targets forward, then attach to the front of that piece.
I try to avoid metal in my target frames. Just another part of the target that could cause problems by deflecting a stray fragment.
The splatter zone is about 20 degrees mostly down/left/right. So, not only do you want to protect the frame, but you also want to avoid hanging targets in each other's splatter zone. Stagger them or use another frame so the fragments aren't hitting other steel targets and changing direction.
I hang 2-3, depending on size, above/below each other, then add cardboard at the bottom to attach paper targets.
This was my first frame after one range day with the targets hanging in the center of the frame's legs. I was using a combination of hardware, but switched to mainly S-hooks for a custom length. I also moved the top bar to the front. The legs barely get any "shrapnel" now!

This frame was brand new before using it one time:
