Chinese Roast Pork - Discuss
« on: September 10, 2020, 08:19:25 AM »
Been wanting to eat Chinese roast pork.  Crispy skin and slightly charred inner surface is key for me.

My #1 is Roast Duck Kitchen.  There's another in Manoa Marketplace that one of my buddies picks up from, but I can't remember the name.  My grandma used to have a really good vendor in Chinatown, but no idea which vendor.

If they are out, where's your #2?

My office is near Roast Duck Kitchen.  While I don't eat there that often these days, it's a treat for me to get a roast pork & roast duck combo.   ;D

Alicia's Market on Mokauea St is pretty good.  Haven't been there in a while.  A couple of good places in Oahu Market in Chinatown too.

I buy my roast pork at Po Sing Kitchen in the Mililani Market Place by Safeway.  Small take out place, nomo place for sit down and eat.

They chop the roast pork, duck, char siu on a wooden chop block that looks 1000 years old.  There is a cardboard makeshift grease splash block that looks like it never was replaced since they opened.  Lots of old grease.  Maybe it makes the roast more ono....

Tonight I going make sari-sari.  But I bought the roast pork from Times.  Ono-Ono brand.  On sale for $4.99 for 8 oz. pkg.

Not the best, but ok to make sabao (soup).

I haven't been to Alicia's since they had the fire.  Their's is tasty, but inconsistent on crispy.  Maybe I just gotta ask for the crispy section.  I like their char siu a lot.

I generally avoid Chinatown because of the parking, but I've heard of Nam Fong.

Asian Mix is near where I live.  I'll have to check that place out.  Roast Duck Kitchen isn't nearly as close.  I'll be in that area this afternoon though.   :P

Wooden chop block!  Was talking about that with some buddies.  Have to be chopped on that wooden block!

Haven't had lunch yet.  All this talk of roast pork making me hungry.

Duck Lee in Market City is my favorite.  I also make a pretty mean roast pork ;-)
"The rifle is a weapon. Let there be no mistake about that. It is a tool of power, and thus dependent completely upon the moral stature of its user. It is equally useful in securing meat for the table, destroying group enemies on the battlefield, and resisting tyranny. In fact, it is the only means of resisting tyranny, since a citizenry armed with rifles simply cannot be tyrannized."

Seems like all these duck places have good roast pork.

And, I will be the judge if you make a "pretty mean roast pork".   ;D

Roast Duck Kitchen is boss.

Chinatown feel and flavor at the gateway to Aiea.

Forget about it on UH football days unless you get there early.
All sold out.
(Guess no need to worry about that this year though.)

Fried rice is mean too.

You haven't lived if you haven't been yelled at by the lady at Roast Duck Kitchen.   ;D

I was gonna pick up roast pork and duck for Super Bowl one year.  I called maybe Mon or Tue before Super Bowl weekend and they were "sold out" and only had gau gee and chicken.   :o

Fong's Meat Market at Oahu Market, facing King Street.  The old man usually hands customers a crusty sample if they're buying a good amount.  Mama san not so generous.

Never tried their roasted turkey tails but it looks so ono...my cholesterol is already high enough that the roast pork is a semi-annual treat.  Their char siu is also excellent.   I have friends from Germany and the Carribean who come and visit and a must stop is Fong's.
