If we don't we will never survive. Reaching the stars and leaving earth is the key to survival of the human race.
Are you saying the human race will vanish from the Earth if we don't find a way to leave the Earth?
I guess you'd like to make a bet on that one, too, since it can't be settled before you DIE.
"Reaching for the stars" is a euphemism for setting extremely high goals for yourself. We can leave Earth and make it to Mars, but the nearest star, Alpha Centauri, is 4.37 Light-Years from Earth. That's 25.7 TRILLION miles. This is the fastest a human has ever traveled:
Upon re-entry to the Earth’s atmosphere on May 26, 1969, the Apollo 10
Lunar Module reached speeds of 24,791 miles per hour
If that's our current data point, 25.7 TRILLION miles at 4,791 miles per hour, assuming we could sustain that speed on average, would take 1,036,667 hours. That's 43194.458 days. That's 118.34 years. ONE WAY!
The ISS is 10 days from its 20th anniversary. The record for a single trip aboard the ISS is 340 days, short of ONE year.
There are 2 planets orbiting Alpha Centauri that we know of, and one has an orbital path that makes it capable of having water. I really don't see us sending humans "to the stars" until and unless we find the means to travel faster than the speed of light.
When do you think we, as a race, will have the knowledge, technology and resources to send a manned spacecraft to a planet over 100 years away that we haven't even been able to send a probe to?

NASA hopes to send a probe to Alpha Centauri in 2069
