one other thing, everyone
yesterday was an extremely hot and muggy day
and a lot of people  were looking a little dehydrated
i was there only from 1pm, and drank 2 gatorades and a diet pepsi before 4 and i was still feelin it all evening
our high school cross country coach would always tell us, you are dehydrated until your pee is clear
and i wasn't peeing much all night

we all need to be better prepared and watch out for each other

haha I was seriously going to take Sterlings water container to the store to refill it for the afternoon session!  I got there 7:45am and went through 3 gatorade big bottles which still wasn't enough liquids, forgot my water jug.  Mahalos to Sean-O and SSH (?) for offering up the ice cold water bottles after!

That's some real life training....

How about more CQB basically point blank draw and fire practice.  Shoot and move sideways or backwards repeat fire (on secondary target?) and assess.  Then more practice around obstacles / slicing the pie work mimicking indoors.  Stuff like that.  Both shoot & no shoot targets.  Only so much we can do with what props we have though.  Plus no more storage on site so we'd have build, take down and take home.  But I bet we could come up with some good stuff with plywood and drywall screws.  Have cordless drill will travel!  :D

mahalo for the suggestions, a78
sterling, myself, and dr george were practicing stuff like you were talking about (moving, secondary targets) during the open range session 2 months ago
it was really excellent training to fire, move, fire, assess, reload, etc

i am sure we will have more built stuff as time goes on
and we will be hitting up people to help with construction too

does anyone have a sample of the frontsight class materials?

Afternoon session:   I think a formal class needs to be created/announced for newbies to get them to participate.  Specifics developed so they know what to bring, how to prepare, what to do arriving at the range, what they will be doing in class, etc.   No one does it better than Front Sight IMO and we'd be doing good to emulate some of their practices.

http://www.frontsight.com/FirearmTraining/front-sight.asp

Seeing as how there was an innocent "parking lot incident" should just spell it out and have a sticky or something.

ex. Arrival to HDF
Leave guns cased
Sign in and pay fees
Uncase / don gear at safe tables areas only -  firearms to remain cold and unloaded
Loading of firearms permitted only at the firing line as directed
Unload and clear when leaving the firing line
etc.

This varies from FS where everyone was gearing up in the parking lot then heading to sign in & inspection.  Different state, range, carry rules, etc.  What are the action bay rules for open carry anways?  Like walking back to your vehicle to get a water bottle or stuff?

other quotes from this thread
highly recommend high-speed gear's taco magazine pouches (they sell at Security Equipment).  As far as holsters go, G-Code, Raven Concealment, safariland, and bladetech are some of the ones I like.

You need at least two magazines (five recommended), and associated holster / magazine pouches for your gun.
Most people are probably using five - six boxes.

Just as a reminder, morning time should be for the intermediate level shooters +   You should have and understand how to safely  draw and engage from the holster; 3-5 magazines is preferred, magazine holder is required, pants, belt, closed toe shoes, eye and ear protection, water.  I generally say you would be good with 300+ rounds.

I might not remember all and get the order of events wrong but it was practical drills.  The day was split into 2 parts - first session for intermediate and second after 12 noon session for newer shooters.  You should be well practiced with safe weapon handling and proficient with your firearms as the AM session goes quickly.  Seeing everyone belt up beforehand, replete with numerous mag holsters and slung rifles, should tell you much already.

We warmed up with rifle first from close range.  Then there was a mag change drill - fire 2 to empty, reload and fire 2 more.  It was fun as was an elimination drill until only two were left at the line and we (the 2 Tongs) shot it out 'till there was one (where's my t-shirt Chris  )   Another drill was transitioning to secondary - fire rifle then backup pistol.  I liked that one a lot.  Lots of different targets to make things interesting including a hostage + bad guy, which some had more fun shooting the hostage, I know I did a couple times LOL.  More various drills including a paired team firing, moving off line then re-engaging the target, backing each other up to reload etc.  Good stuff.

The precision drills is where the pushups and laps came in regarding errors.  Ok so I totally didn't understand the drill so center massed most till the light went on!  Doh. Too late and everyone suffered at the end, e kala mai.  But if this old slightly broken guy can go then you can too.  Heck I will do the exercises if even didn't have to now that I know what's going on.  But the real point is accuracy on target.

We approached noon so the range opened up to non drill firing.  I tried out some CQB draw firing but with varying success as further from target than ideal for that but it was good to practice live.  Shot at pieces of stuff dancing them around the berm.  Shot some kneeling to standing. The sound of other's rapid fire was awesome - HDF range day!

Not every range day will be the same.  For example hnl.flyboy successfully performed trick shooting using reflected image off a diamond ring!  Just don't see that every day now do ya?

My advice is have your gear squared away.  Have a sturdy belt, holster for pistol (OWB at 9 or 3 best here so you don't flag anyone), rifle, many mags and a sling.  Got a vest or carrier?  Try it out.  Bring water.  There was a long line of tables to gear up but do not go hot yet- that is only allowed at the line and firearms are unloaded before leaving the line each time.  No one is breathing down your neck so that one is easy to miss thinking you're at home or whatever.  I violated it as well but caught myself and walked back up the berm to unload and didn't do it again.  My EoTech battery ran dry so was using irons most of the day.  Run what you brung and be ready to deal with equipment failures it's all part of learning and surviving afterall.

Had to leave so couldn't stay for the second session but will stay next time!  It was the saddest thing to unbelt and put gear away to go I tell you.  I hope you have as much fun as I did and take away much valuable lessons and practice time.  HDF is a great non-competitive venue and we are lucky to have these range days.  Looking forward to the next one!

from lifer
Ear and eye pro

Hat
T shirt, long sleeve good idea. If short sleeve, sunscreen
Long pants WITH belt
Close toed shoes, no slippas!
Gloves, your call
Knee pads, your call (not really needed)
Camelbak, your call

Pistol holster
Mag holder

Just wear something comfortable and that you can maneuver in. I've seen everything from jeans, to shorts( not recommended) to Docker slacks, to 5-11 pants. It's all good.

Lots of water/ Gatorade, etc
Snacks
If you are there all day it's hot as hell and you get hungry/thirsty.

Lots of ammo

I usually also give a donation to Chris and the HDF Warchest

HDF Range Day: November 30, 2013         Aloha Fellow HDF shooters I am posting up this months Shooting Session;
This month we are holding a 101/ beginner introduction class at 8:00am -8:45. The reason for holding this session first is so that the new people can maybe participate in the rest of the training day if confident enough.
Anybody can attend this portion even the advanced individuals for warm up for the intermediate session. The advance session will start immediatly following the 101 session and go till approx 1pm.

The training for the day will consist of Carbine (150 rounds) and Pistol (150 rounds)approx. You will need a sling for your carbine and a belt holster for your pistol. Also minimum mags for both carbine and pistol  are 2 but recommend up to 5 for both carbine and pistol.
Training for the day will consist of some movement drills, Accuracy torture drills, and cover drills so come ready for another SAFE and exciting fun day with THE HAWAII DEFENSE FOUNDATION.

Attire long pants sturdy belt closed toe shoes a hat to cover you from sun. ear pro / eye pro. Suncreen is a good idea. Bring a lunch and lots of water to hydrate!!!!
FEE Schedule is as follows:
Starting off with the sign in, waivers and fees. everyone must sign in and sign waivers prior to shooting. Everyone! At this time will pay "match fees" collected pior to shooting. Fee schedule as follows HDF current members "match fee" is $10.00.  As For non-members its $20.00 without joininig the HDF, Or they will be encouraged to join the HDF at this time @ $25.00 for membership and then it would be $10.00 for the day total $35.00 so take advantage of this now.
also forgot the free shoot portion of the day fee is $10.00 for anyone coming out just for that portion which is still a "match fee" because the team building portion is the "match" which is at the end of the day.

Unless other RO's disagree, our current policy has been to let the individual run IWB with the shirt tucked in behind it.   If you want to work on your concealed draw, you can do that at home :-).  It's just another step that we have to worry about on the range.  Normally, there are many, many other things we can work on improving on people that you shouldn't have to worry about it.

When the laws change to the point where the training we are doing is for concealment, then that will have to be revised.  Should the range owners then have a problem with us training like that it will have to be addressed.

so is IWB still ok with tucked shirt? i was going to order a holster this week.
