Trump damaged himself, if he had simply handled covid better, then this crisis would have helped him get re-elected. If democrats caused this crisis to hurt Trump then that was a really risky bet because it was a perfect situation for Trump, problem is Trump fumbled the great hand dealt to him.

Sweden didn't do lockdowns but they did have rules about wearing masks and high rates of mask wearing. Not sure how that says anything about masks not being effective.

What should Trump had done to "handle COVID better?"  He's not the king of the US.  Each state has city governments, governors and legislators.  What has Trump NOT done that our wonderful Hawaii government hasn't done as well?

You sound like every Democrat that jumped on Bush for the Katrina response.  The STATES run by DEMOCRATS, especially LA, failed.  Bush had supplies, trucks and buses waiting at the state border ready to help New Orleans, but the governor said, "No thanks!  We're fine."

Then, when it became obvious the people were being left to suffer on their own, they finally allowed FEMA into the state.  Afterward, the media and Democrats blamed Bush for everything, including the levy that broke -- something the New Orleans powers that be were warned about ever since it was built.

Yeah, Trump is President, but we are a collection of INDEPENDENT STATES.  Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, the governors asked for, Trump provided.

Did you expect to see Trump in a lab coat working on a vaccine?  Geesh!   :wtf:

Do what Hawaii did only nationally and better.   Declare federal emergency, lock down all the states.  Roll out tests and put the full force of government to increase testing, instead of avoiding tests.  Along with locking ALL travel to china to exemptions.  Not call it a small flu that will disappear in the summer.   Don't withhold info on the critical  beginning months like he admitted doing.  Mask mandate for public early on.  Get ahead of this virus before it became impossible to stop.

Rabid little socialists worship the all-powerful state controlling all aspects of the lives of the stupid peasants.
For they are the only ones enlightened enough to see the true way to communist utopia.

No,  this is war,  there's is special temporary sacrifices that area needed to protect the nation.  Just like ww2 and other large wars.

There was a shortage of masks in the beginning.  Even if you tell people to only wear homemade masks, if they can get their hands on commercially made ones, they will buy, hoard and scalp them on eBay.

At that stage, we would have seen a spike in cases among first responders and healthcare workers, because with the PROPER masks, they would been infected at a time when we could not afford for them to be quarantined.  That would have definitely caused the overwhelming of services we flattened the curve to avoid.

It's easy to say "We should have" after the fact, especially when you don't THINK about what the repercussions of those alternative acts would have caused.

Was it ever clarified whether Hawaii/Nation's COVID death numbers are people died with COVID or people died due to COVID?

the only war we have is between us humans.
The virus doesn't know anything about conflict. We created the economic downturns when we decided to "shelter in place." We created all these hardships.
The virus didn't create these conditions - WE DID.

Tell us what you know about war.

Well there was a cure, still available.  Trump's reticence with pressure from big pharma, squelched this cheap and effective cure.  Prophylaxis using very light dosed without the Z pak efrfective.  Too bad, prolly cost him the election.https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/study-finds-84-fewer-hospitalizations-for-patients-treated-with-controversial-drug-hydroxychloroquine

ivermectin is even better than HCQ
but big pharma still pushing remdesivir, which has been found to be far less effective
and the vaccine...

China (humans) released the virus on the world.  If it was intentional, then it definitely falls under the category of "act of war."  If so, then China is the enemy, not COVID-19.  The virus is merely a bio-weapon.

But since it began in their population, we have to err on the side of "oops!"

You could say we (humans) let the Genie out of the bottle -- just like happens in many SciFi stories.  I could rattle off a dozen movies, TV series episodes and books that have an apocalyptic backdrop created by humans trying to control things that are beyond our control.

We're too smart for our own good.

I agree and disagree. I hate the patriot act and the stupid Republicans for supporting it.  But at the same time there's no law for covid. It by definition can't last forever.   All we had to do was lock down in the beginning like new Zealand and other counties.  Then we could be virtually back to normal by now.  Look at past wars and rationing. There wasn't any lasting damage and we won the "war".

More people (some of them lower-level government officials) are standing up and not taking the bullshit anymore. Hold the line!

Colorado County Refuses to Enforce Lockdowns as Civil Disobedience Spreads Across America

Weld County’s defiance came days before news broke that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is “furious” because a Brooklyn synagogue held a secret wedding.

Wednesday, November 25, 2020

Jon Miltimore

Colorado officials last week announced that several counties had moved into the “red level”—the second-highest measurement on its COVID-19 dial—and would be forced to implement new regulations on restaurants, gyms, and other parts of the economy to combat the virus.

Then something remarkable happened. Weld County, a county in the northern part of the state with a population of roughly a quarter million people, politely said no.

“Instead, county government continues to do what it has done since March, which is promote and encourage residents and business owners to take individual responsibility and make decisions to protect themselves, their families, their community and their businesses,” the Board of Commissioners said in a statement.

With a test-positivity rate north of 16 percent, Weld County’s infection rate is well above the 5 percent threshold the World Health Organization uses as a benchmark for taking proactive measures to limit the spread of the virus. Nevertheless, county officials enumerated what they would not do.

“The county will not enforce a rule confining individuals to their homes for an undetermined length of time;

the county will not enforce a rule that states residents cannot have personal gatherings;

the county will not tell the school districts how to provide education to their students;

the county will not enforce a rule requiring a reduction of attendees in places of worship;

the county will not enforce a rule demanding restaurants close their indoor dining areas;

the county will not enforce any rule that forces a business to shut down or impedes their ability to operate.”
