I agree and disagree. I hate the patriot act and the stupid Republicans for supporting it.  But at the same time there's no law for covid. It by definition can't last forever.   All we had to do was lock down in the beginning like new Zealand and other counties.  Then we could be virtually back to normal by now.  Look at past wars and rationing. There wasn't any lasting damage and we won the "war".

Only "stupid Republicans" support it?  Really?

Why the Hell Did Democrats Just Extend the Patriot Act?

Quote
By tucking the measure into a must-pass bill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi forced many
members who oppose the Patriot Act to vote in favor of its extension. “Although I do have
serious concerns with reauthorizing Section 215,” Representative Bobby Rush of Illinois
told The Hill, “we must focus on the bigger picture here.” In late October, Rush signed a
letter co-authored by Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Earl Blumenauer, which read,
“We will not support any legislation that extends Section 215’s sunset date if it fails to contain
robust reforms that protect innocent people from unjust surveillance.”

On Monday night, Amash submitted an amendment to strip the Patriot Act language from
the budget bill, but the amendment was blocked by Democrats on the Rules Committee.

Just 10 Democrats defied the leadership to vote against the resolution...

By LAW (not just definition), COVID restrictions were supposed to END after 60 days from declaration of an emergency.  The state legislatures were supposed to enact real laws to extend any restrictions beyond that.

If the states can extend a 60-day executive power to coming up on a year, why on God's green Earth would you ever believe "It by definition can't last forever?"  Have you not been paying attention all these months?
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Heather MacDonald broadens the context, for those who are so lamely narrow-minded as to think this is just about "a temporary public health emergency".

More Salem than Thanksgiving

Coronavirus panic has set America back hundreds of years

Heather Mac Donald

November 24, 2020

Excerpt (opening paragraphs of a long but excellent article):

Had King James’s Privy Council contained a proto-Anthony Fauci in 1620, there might not have been a Thanksgiving holiday for the current-day Fauci and his peers to cancel four centuries later. The transatlantic voyage that brought the Pilgrims to Plymouth Rock would have been unthinkable under the ‘stay safe’ philosophy that now governs American life.

Nearly half the 102 occupants of the Mayflower died in their first year of settlement at Plymouth, sometimes at a rate of three a day. Such a mortality rate was predictable. The earlier outpost at Jamestown, founded in 1607, lost 66 of its original 104 settlers in its first nine months. By 1609, following the also predictable loss at sea of a ship coming to resupply the colony, starvation at Jamestown had grown so dire that residents dug corpses from their graves to eat any remaining flesh, later reported the colony’s first president in 1625.

Other early settlement casualties included the outpost of Roanoke, which simply disappeared. Overall, for every six would-be colonists who ventured across the Atlantic, only one survived, according to one estimate. Trying to establish a new life in the New World was most definitely not ‘safe’.

And yet the voyagers kept coming, driven by something beyond safetyism — religious zeal, ambition, passion for discovery, the desire for greater freedom. Those Americans who later spread across the continent, whether as solo explorers or in wagon trains, likewise eschewed a ‘stay safe’ philosophy.

Today, we are strangling American society in order to avoid a risk of death so infinitesimal — roughly 0.001 percent — for the majority of Americans that it would not have registered in any possible cost-benefit analysis governing both notable American endeavors and quotidian activities over the last four centuries. Our current Thanksgiving Day mantras — ‘Stay within your pod. Stay within your bubble. Stay within your household’ (in the words of a University of California, San Francisco, epidemiologist); don’t travel, don’t share food, don’t touch your family members or friends, speak only in hushed tones — make a mockery of the spirit that creates a country and sustains human life.

This present moment is less like that first Thanksgiving celebration and more like the Salem witch frenzy of 1692. To be sure, the coronavirus is real; witches were not. The virus has cost thousands of lives; witches did not. But the fear that has gripped much of the population over the last year, whipped up by sundry experts and authorities, is as disconnected from reason as that emblematic burst of hysteria in colonial Massachusetts and other such panics throughout medieval and early modern Europe. The shared features of all such contagious fear events include the following:

Here she is in a brief interview on Steve Bannon's War Room yesterday:

Wearing a mask is a little inconvenient at times because I’m forgetful and have to walk back to my car grab my mask.

Wearing the mask is relatively minor. When I worked in the pineapple fields we wore bandannas/etc the whole shift.

I was lucky and usually worked the cooler evening shift and only did it maybe 1-2 summers.  The adults worked the day shift in the hot sun for I don’t know how many years/decades till they could get an easier job on the plantation.  I swear some of the adults looked like they were 60 years plus.

Picking pineapples was a suck job and I’d have dreams/nite mares of fields full of ripe pineapples.  When I graduated high school, I knew I didn’t want to work on any plantation and wanted a job in an office.

The kind of weird thing is when I did have to pick pineapple with that bandanna, double t shirt, arm guards, blue jeans, canvas chaps and work shoes - I don’t really ever recall complaining about it.  Little girls could do it.  Old ladies could do it.  I don’t recall really anyone complaining about. So I didn’t say anything because I was an outsider from Maui and I didn’t want people to know how weak/lame I was.

My in laws aren’t in good health so even the flu can be dangerous.  So I wear a mask.

Wearing a mask isn’t that bad all things considered

Perfect (ironic?) statement from a Covid Cult member. Disregard all the facts (and don't bother to discover the facts) and take a knee (or whatever else is "mandated") when the plantation owner commands it.

Went to the grocery store this morning to buy the kiddos what they wanted for lunch and dinner (PB&J and Hot Dogs with Tater Tots).

Anyway, I counted well over half the people in the store, I estimate around 60-65% were not wearing masks. Yes the store has a mask mandate posted. No they were not enforcing it from what I saw. The more we resist the sooner we can get back our freedom. No more mask wearing because masks don’t work. No more lockdowns because all they do is to prolong the inevitable.

That's impossible to prove currently how long it will last but once vaccines and covid goes the way of the dodo, there's no justification to continue.  Unlike the patriot act "technically" does.

The problem is... if people were rational, logical, interested in discovering the actual evidence, and capable of understanding the evidence... none of this would ever have happened after the first month or so when no one knew the facts of how "THE VIRUS!!" worked. But they aren't and so here we are now. I seriously doubt anything will change given the apparent nature of humans. But I do see more people just getting fed up with the bullying aspect of it. I'm all for that too. Fuck the authoritarian statists and all their bullshit. In any and every way possible.  :shaka:

"Johns Hopkins University: “Surprisingly [haha... to them maybe], the deaths of older people stayed the same before and after COVID-19. Since COVID-19 mainly affects the elderly, experts expected an increase in the percentage of deaths in older age groups. However, this increase is not seen from the CDC data. In fact, the percentages of deaths among all age groups remain relatively the same."

What?  I’m a cult member?  Because I’m cautious?

Punaperson - I in return dub you a member of the whambulance cult.  It’s members sound like a baby  + ambulance as they whine.  Wha..wha..wha

I’m just kidding

As a parent with kids in college, in-laws to help and a job dealing with customers, this pissing and moaning about wearing a mask is pretty funny.

You're not being "cautious" by "wearing a mask". You're deluded.

I couldn't care less if you wear a mask or not. But don't pretend you are doing something useful or helpful by doing so. You are only submitting to baseless propaganda. Which you are free to do. Go right ahead. And be sure to kowtow to whatever "rules" "for the good of the community" are coming next. You know, like turning in your semi-automatic rifle with it's over-10-round magazines. I mean, you'll still have revolvers, right? Pissing and moaning about giving up semi-autos is pretty funny.

This is not just about wearing masks - this is how local governments mandated the population to perform a specific behavior without legislation.
Because they can use the same mechanism to dissolve our 2A right or anything else for that matter
Here's how some are framing it. They are relating our 2a to an "epidemic" - remember when COVID was just an epidemic

Maybe I am deluded.

I’m sorry I don’t have a medical degree, I don’t spend a whole lot of time on the web and I don’t really know if the masks and washing my hands really work but some guy that is smarter than me and specializes in that stuff recommends it and doctors/nurses do it.

I figure they may know some something.  More so than some guys ranting on the Internet.

Even if it turns out that masks and washing my hands was for nothing, it wasn’t a big deal to me.   I wash my hands everytime I use the restroom, washing a few more times is relatively minor.

Obviously it is a big deal to some people.

If for some reason all my guns vanished into thin air and I could not procure another, l wouldn’t roll over and die because shooting is mainly a hobby

Ps -  no one really gives a poop about what you or I post.
