I try to like those red boxes but i always go back to the green ones.
I tried as well. Hornady makes some damn nice looking bullets. And I keep reading in the gun rags that Hornady's shoot real well out of their guns. But they don't shoot as well as the Sierras out of my guns. Even Speer makes some great bullets but Sierra's still best them. And Sierra prices are traditionally much less than the Hornady's, Noslers, etc. But slightly more than Speer.

Life is too short not to shoot the best bullets at the best price.

Aloha, Resident since 2007 Brought in by US Army, now retired and staying.  Sold some guns before coming as everyone said HI such an anti gun state.  Lots of goofy gun restrictions, but lots of good gun respecting citizens too.  Everything I have,(not much) was purchased outside of the state.   So, I'm wanting to purchase a 5.56, something or other, need to get "Permit to Acquire" first.  Or, do I need one if buying a rifle online and shipping to local FFL?

permit to acquire is required for all in state transfers , private or dealers.
each handgun requires a separate permit. long guns are unlimited form one year of issue.
firearms already in possession, does not require a permit, i.e.: imported form out of state.

I'd recommend you go to HPD and apply for the long gun permit as soon as it's convenient.  Take ID, $14.75 for fingerprinting (one-time requirement for first firearm permit), doctor info if not a major HMO in Hawaii, and proof of US residency if born outside the US..

Pick up the completed permit after the 2 week waiting period.  You have a 6-day window to pick it up.  If you wait longer than 6 days after it's ready for pick up, they will shred the permit, and you start all over again with the application and 2-week wait.

That permit is valid for a full year, and it allows you to purchase an unlimited number of long guns.

Once you have the long gun permit, you can take that to any FFL and pick up a new rifle or shotgun on the same visit.  If you order online, the rifle will ship to an FFL.  That FFL will transfer the firearm to you as if you bought it from the local FFL, even though you paid the online seller.

When you pick up the long gun, you have 5 days to take it to HPD and register it.

Put the long gun permit in your safe or somewhere you won't lose it.  You should take it with you anytime you go to apply for another permit.  It makes things go much quicker and easier for the guys helping you.

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping to avoid waiting in line at HPD over and over. I know I got to again to register.  I've already registered my others. They already have my fingerprints as well.   I purchased a deployment pistol while in Afghanistan. Was shipped to ffl with others, but I don't recall doing a permit to purchase since it was purchased elsewhere and shipped to this state. My memory is shot.  :shake:

Aloha everyone!

New member here. :)

Born and raised local girl, but my husband is in the Navy so we've been to the mainland and are back (again) for his current duty station.

My husband* and I will be at the next safety class in December and hope to participate in range days as often as we can, so if you are at the range and happen to see my name tag, feel free to say hello! :)

- Leialoha

(*He already has extensive training but his paperwork is still tied to his old boat, which is currently on deployment so instead of waiting a while for the boat to get back he decided to take the safety class here along with me so we could apply for our permits to acquire together.)

Hey guys! Chris here. I am in the Navy and moving to Oahu in Febuary with my Wife, little baby girl, and Shiba Inu dog!

I grew up in Vermont and spent time shooting when I was younger as well as a little bit in the Navy, but basically I am self taught. Parents weren't into hunting or anything so we never owned guns. Usually  shot with friends in our back yards. I now own a SCAR 17 with the Burris XTR2 1.5-8x. and a FN FNS-9. Maryland has very few rifle ranges so I have not had much time with the SCAR and zero range time with the optics! Can't wait to get out to Hawaii and start shooting more.

Curious about the mag sizes for my SCAR and FNS-9. 20rds and 17 respectively. Not sure if they will need blocks or not.

I'm a Shiba owner too, great dogs!  The fur sucks though...  Haha.  Welcome to the group!

We'll be at the HDF classes. :)

I actually didn't find out about LIFE till after I joined the forum and was super stoked to hear that they have female instructors.
I myself was a tomboy with all guy friends growing up, so in some instances it's easier to learn from a male instructor but I can imagine for some ladies it may be less intimidating.

PS - Aloha and welcome obababoy!

HDF range days are the last saturday of the month and HRA/LIFE fun shoots usually the last sunday, so we are usually too tired to do both
we encourage participation with as many groups as you can
some people here also are in SRGC (schofield rod and gun club)
and i have been to one hawaii practical shooters pistol match and hopefully am going to the one in early decmeber too

Absolutely agree, and it's actually something we both planned to do anyway after finding out about them. I had read that their Fun Shoots were for members only.
Plus there will always be new things to learn from different instructors, and it's great to be able to meet and make connections with more like-minded people.
My husband would probably love to participate in the practical matches.
