Aloha guys/gals i'm new to this forum but not new to firearms in general, been an avid hunter and gun owner for over 14 years. I discovered this forum while researching CCW laws in hawaii and found this forum to be very informative, I was born and raised in Oahu and I still reside here, would love to do range days as I want to test out my newly aqcuired rifle and handguns.

We do our quarterly firearm qualification there. It's a nice place. If i do go shooting there on my own, i just show my employee card and only get charged $10 to use their range.

First and foremost I would like to thank this site for being an awesome tool for me to learn a bit about Hawaii’s gun regs and to see that there is possible change for the better coming soon.

My name is Michael and I am a Staff Sergeant in the USAF, I will be PCSing out to Hickam AFB and I had wanted to take out my firearms with me.

I have a few questions on acquiring a CCW permit and various gun laws:
1.   Is Hawaii a may or shall issue state?
2.   How easy would it be for me to acquire a license (classes or previous out of state CCW permits)
3.   Are there any obscure places I would not be able to carry other than the typical fed buildings, school, bars, ect?
4.   Is the state of Hawaii a retreat or castle state?
5.   Are there any laws on high capacity magazines? (e.g. Rifle: 30rnd Mags and 120rnd drums Pistol: 19 rnd.)
6.   Are there any good shooting clubs or ranges on Oahu?

Thank you and I look forward to my time in the great state of Hawaii.

1. May issue state.
3. Everywhere but your own property.
4. Castle state.
5. Riffle mags are kind of up in the air but places still sell 30 rounders. Pistol limit is 10.
6. We only got one range with shitty hours. Got a few gun clubs though.

2.   How easy would it be for me to acquire a license (classes or previous out of state CCW permits) CCW license? not gonna happen.

4.   Is the state of Hawaii a retreat or castle state?  Castle state

6.   Are there any good shooting clubs or ranges on Oahu?  Lots of clubs. HDF, MPPL, HPS, etc.., only public range is Kokohead (on Oahu).

Thank you and I look forward to my time in the great state of Hawaii.

That's slightly misleading. Very special people can get a CCW license, like the chief's friends and family, private security companies, law enforcement......
You also have 72 hours to register your firearms upon arrival.

Well aint that some s**t. Is there a provision for active duty military members? I have been reading a bit online on the laws in HI. Is there a certain police station I have to go register or can any station do? Are there any fees that go along with registering my weapons?

And thank you to all of the people who have responded so quickly to my post.

I'm inclined to say no to active duty military, but maybe someone else here knows better.

Firearm registrations on Oahu all go through the main police station on Beretania:
Records and Identification Division, Firearms Section
801 South Beretania Street
Honolulu, Hawaii 96813
Hours are 7:30-4:30, out of state registrations only accepted prior to 4:00 though. I would go around 10am or 2pm, usually no line in my experience.

There's a one time fee for the FBI fingerprinting thing of $16.50, (cash, cashiers check, or money order) bring exact change. I don't know if they fingerprint for out of state registrations, but it would be kinda dumb not to fingerprint everyone.

Also, to clarify that 72 hour thing. It's 72 hours after your arrival or your firearms arrival, whichever is later. But if you can't make it within that time frame then just get it done ASAP, I've never heard of anyone being given a hard time about it.

All first timers will have to go through the finger print process. I moved from out of state and had to do it the first registration. If bringing a firearm from out of state, no permit, just registration. The law says registration is required within 72hrs. of arrival. The only penalty is if you get caught. The state is mostly concerned being stolen and/or used in a crime while being registered out of state.(or not at all) Of course "Big Brother" likes to keep an eye on things.

Law enforcement definitely DO NOT get issued a CCW. Where do you get your information?
They're exempted from needing a CCW to carry a firearm. Why would there be a need to issue a CCW to them?

Also, if you can give me one legitimate example of a Honolulu issued CCW with proof, I'll give you a free gun.
