Mahalo Senators Gabbard and Fevella for standing up for the Constitutional rights of the people of Hawaii. Nothing is more sacrosanct in our lives than the right to think and say what we want, regardless of others opinions; and the right to defend ourselves in the manner in which we, the people, decide. There was a very specific reason the founders of our country put those two Amendments to the Constitution at the very beginning. 

When others decide to silence views or not listen to what the citizenry have to have to say, that is nothing more than a disservice to the very populace which put our representatives in their respective positions. It was shown on February 12th during the Committee hearing on SB301 that there was a huge opposition to the bill and yet the bill was deferred. Well over 1100 pieces of testimony were given and of the testimony given, only 16 were in support of the bill, and the remainder being in opposition to the bill. As such, the bill should have been defeated and never seen again. But the bill was deferred to February 17th and no testimony will be allowed. There is also no committee report for the public to review the voting record of the bill or if any amendments or changes to the bill are occurring. This is completely contrary with Hawaii’s Sunshine Law, the irony of which is not lost as the deferred hearing for SB1034-RELATING TO SUNSHINE LAW BOARDS is being held just prior to the SB301 hearing.

So again, I will implore you, the committee members to listen to your constituents and kill SB301 during the hearing. It is poorly written, vague in its descriptions and will do nothing more than make criminals out of the law-abiding people of Hawaii. It also does nothing to address the financial impact to the State on how the State will purport to purchase all of the  now "illegal" firearms back from the people, which they legally procured and own. That cost alone will run into the millions of dollars. I will also ask all other Senators and Representatives to stand up for the rights of the people of Hawaii and implore the committee to defeat and kill this bill.

Bill passed but it removed semi auto rifles.  It is now just a rifle mag ban of  >10rds.

Favella, Gabbard, and Acasio voted no.
Mercado-Kim votes with reservations which is super surprising and a W for us
Lee, Rhodes and K votes yes (we knew this)

Bill has no grandfather clause for rifle mags.  There are 2 pending mag lawsuits, 1 in the 9th circuit and 1 locally by a HIFICO director.  So possible to put a stay if the bill passes into law.

Thanks for the update.  My take on the above is that the divide is as close to 50/50 as I've seen things.  Need to get six-head Rhodes out. 

Good thing so many of us just have boxes with sheet metal parts, springs and such rolling around.

Someone did run against him this past November and lost bad. And Rhodes won't give up his JUD seat either. He has the sole power to see what bills get a hearing or not. TBH, that's more power than the governor who just signs the bills at the end of the process.  So no way he will give up that committee, especially when he sites Giffords stuff in his bills. They want to keep him there.

That was Roz Baker.  IIRC she also corrected that the AG is a she when someone said he.

50/50% with grandfathering.  It barely lost last year and we had a few seats flip more anti-gun since then.  On the plus side we have a few weeks to prepare and Duncan v Becerra won in the 9th last year, though the appeal is stayed right now.
