Costco started offering ethanol-free gas last year. They started by having regular-unleaded (87 Octane) without ethanol. They planned to switch over the higher octane premium-unleaded, too.
From what I've read, ethanol added to gas replaces 10% of the gasoline by volume, but it only provided 3% of the total energy -- meaning you have to burn 107% of the mixture to get the same energy as the 100% gasoline-only amount.
On top of that, you're taking about 20% of the feed/food corn off the market, which drives up prices, increases the amount of corn needing to be grown and brought to market, and that means farm equipment has to plant, harvest and transport the extra corn.
Then there's the cost of damage caused to engines that can't handle the ethanol, like lawn mowers, boat engines, chain saws, etc.
Add the amount of energy it takes to process corn into ethanol, and the entire ethanol-gasoline program wasted more fossil fuel energy than it replaced.
When we see results like that that then requires decades to be fixed, imagine what problems an all EV world might create.
These government-mandated "solutions" always remind me of the old book & song, "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly". When you focus on a narrow requirement, the solution is often worse than the original problem.
