Speaking of GoT

It's easy to forget the problems with Might Makes Right when you feel like the mighty one.

Those problems inevitably catch up with everyone who uses that justification.

Religious knowledge is meant to save us from our own selfishness and stupidity

Well the good religions anyway...

Stop blaming lazy people. We didn’t do anything.

Science justified what hitler did. Science justified treatment of blacks (Tuskegee airmen, segregation, etc...). And now in hindsight, we know science was wrong.

If only people who participated in each had good morals and followed it.

There wasn't science.  It was fake news.   Do you have peer reviewed studies accepted throughout the scientific community that justified those actions?.

Science has no moral teaching.
It is what it is at the time.
Good and bad are not even part of it. If it kills you, it kills you. If it makes you live longer it makes you live longer.
If you get an abortion, the thing inside is gone.
Those are facts.
Right or wrong, good or bad, now we’re no longer in science. We’re into religion or moral beliefs.
Can argue was it alive or does it matter. That’s a moral discussion. Science supports both sides.
I think morals are rooted in religion, many of them in many cultures.
Even if one is not religious, most highly likely if they have morals they are rooted in a religion.

That scene was savage. One of the best endings to an episode in the entire series.

If its proven yeah.  I doubt you can do that.  Morals come and go but science lasts forever.  Back in the old days they did rape and pillage.  Now its considered wrong.  What's to say there won't be a change of morals later?  But science if proven will be the same regardless of morals.  Whether we follow science is another story...

But the underlying question is whether there is something factually moral regardless of fickle human evolving beliefs. Are there things that are truly morally wrong and will always be no matter whether it is popular opinion or not. Science along cannot address that. The entire notion of justice is based on right and wrong, not merely illegal or illegal (a legal definition).

Why should I not rape and pillage as long as I can get away with it?

Logan's Run
Quote
Logan's Run is a science fiction novel by American writers a William F. Nolan and
George Clayton Johnson. Published in 1967, the novel depicts a dystopic ageist
future society in which both population and the consumption of resources are maintained
in equilibrium by requiring the death of everyone reaching the age of 21. The story
follows the actions of Logan, a Sandman charged with enforcing the rule, as he tracks
down and kills citizens who "run" from society's lethal demand—only to end up "running"
himself.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logan's_Run

Nothing "wrong" with this plan.

"Trust the science and the government.  They have your well-being at heart."
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

I don't think there is truly such thing as basic morals.  Religion encouraged immoral actions in the past.  Some encourage it now in the present.  Societies rose and fell with various immoral actions and laws.  The only thing that can remain constant is proof if something is good or bad for a species.  That can be proven with science.  Everything else is opinion.

Just like one can not believe in religion, I guess one can not believe in morals.  However, in this case, I don't think some understand or appreciate that morals are.

And just because some book or teachings condoned or accepted some actions, doesn't make it more or less moral/immoral.

Who decides morals and why is it different for everyone?

Me tinks me undahstahnds where the poster is coming from.  But like many previous posts, just wanting to argue, they double down and the BS rises to the surface and totally undermines the argument. . .

Occasionally over the ten thousand of years (possibly longer) there were scribes who observed the many disasters during the cycles of history.
They figured out that a certain set of rules kept societies more or less stable, while others who did not follow the rules rapidly went down the toilet.
Unfortunately today way too many people do not understand what a powerful and useful tool myths are, and either take them literally or dismiss them altogether.

Like literally, dude.

But seriously, stuff like the 10 plagues of Egypt (et al) is interesting to me.  I'm interested in ancient Egypt, mostly for the pharaohs and mummies and stuff, but all of that history, and what came before them is super interesting to me.
