This is the problem of deciding that leadership is acting like Biden and his 'I am out of patience' approach. 1) You wanna make rules that are almost impossible to live by even for yourself of course people are going to get in your grill.

Real leadership would be statements of guidance and health warnings while spending every other waking moment back stopping the medical profession and getting them any and all available resources they need to stay on top of things.

Crisis is supposed to be a time to bring folks together to instead of pushing them apart and breaking their stuff.

I don't care if they think they are doing it for 'the right reasons' they have been going about it the wrong way the whole time.

2) No one respects people who come off as a Bully. Even if it's 'for your own good'.

1) I agree.  In this case, I can give him, or any Mayor the benefit of the doubt that there are reasons that the public isn't aware of.  That said, I am admittedly not the most current on that stuff.

2) That's what I was primarily getting at.

Hi OF
I have known you for many years and you are a righteous and stand up man.
I also feel that the mayor is probably the best mayor we have had in many years.
The optics of the video are bad. This is a kin to Gavin Newsome's French Laundry
video. This will open the door for some joker to cause all sorts of trouble for us.
Good or bad, I don't have an opinion really.  I think he is in a no-win situation politically and in many other ways.  That said, can't really think of a mayor where I was like "damn, that guy (or gal) is good".  Doesn't help that I have an overall negative opinion of pretty much all politicians.   ;D

Ideal leadership in my opinion would've assured the People that the govt has this under control and there is no need to worry or fear - a secure place to work and play.
Instead we have a govt that is continuing to push fear and worry in all aspects of governance. I understand that Mayors are under control of Gov Ige in regards to their plans. We need a Mayor to stand up to him.  Businesses are suffering and got the short end of this stick.
That is a demonstrated and real impact.

Wonder how "I tried to do my best" would be received by those business owners. . .

He can't win.   If he didn't do restrictions covid continues to spike, hospitals get full and everyone gets angry.   🙄

Covid restricts/solving is more important to many than other issues so this is a smart play.

I've been to the ER on several occasions and to different hospitals, there wasn't a time when they weren't full. This was in 2012 to 2019. I was sitting next to people who tried to commit suicide to people that had a tooth ache. Listening to someone get stitches on their wrist was excruciating. Listening to a patient who was in the ER because they forgot to take their meds and order the ER nurse around was very infuriating. A big issue was that people with no insurance would go straight to the ER because hospitals don't turn people away. That's the problem.

My Kaiser plan kept experimenting with higher and lower co-pays for ER visits.  Higher co-pays were intended to keep the non-urgent cases away so they would opt for the less expensive office visit.  Lower co-pays were supposed to be a way of not "penalizing" those who really needed to seek urgent care.  Hard to find a balance.

The telephone Advice Nurse service has helped quite a bit.  You can get expert advice on whether you need to go to the ER, or how you can treat it yourself while making an office appointment.  This is rather new-ish, so not everyone uses it -- thus some people will go to the ER first anyway.

Some can't get away during regular hours, so they go after work or when someone is home to watch the kids.

Don't discount the parents who have sick kids.  It's difficult to tell sometimes if your kid is super sick or not.  Many parents take their kids to the ER just to be safe.

I've gone to the ER mostly because I injured myself and needed something for the pain.  I can usually treat a minor injury, but I'm not stockpiling opioids like I'm sure some are.

the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.

Since this pandemic began and a vaccine was introduced I was thinking that because of our geography, once we get this under control our marketing opportunity for tourism would be a "Safe place to vacation" We could've seen a windfall of revenue for the State of Hawaii. But instead we got pushback from people who didn't want to go back to work and all the people still in their basements. We missed that opportunity as other vacation destination advertised that and WELCOMED tourists. Nope not us. Instead the very organization that was created to promote tourism did the opposite. If that's so, why do we keep giving these people/agencies money? Are we that stupid?

Separate topic, but I’ve been to ERs for myself and loved ones where it has been less than half capacity.  However, that was Straub and Kuakini.  Places like Queens and Pali Momi tended to be full.  I think lots of better safe than sorry approaches.  With my dad, there were a couple of cases where the “main” physician gave us a “that condition is of interest, but no openings, so head to ER to get checked out if you’re concerned”.  In a couple of cases, the condition of interest was enough that my dad was admitted.  That said, I can see many “checked you out, you’re good to go”.

Agree somewhat with issues with ER being a safety net for some.  I’ve been in the ER a few times when there were frequent fliers returning.  One was a homeless guy who had super low blood sugar.  EMTs who brought him in mentioned that that wasn’t the first time.  Was he doing it on purpose or not?  Who knows.  When the guy came to, he refused further treatment or food.  They suspected, or at least made comments that he was trying to kill himself with insulin.

I thought Urgent Care facilities would help that situation.  I’ve never been to one, but family and friends who have been have had mixed feedback and results.  Overall, I still believe that the healthcare industry executives have a lot to blame for the issues we see.

Yeah, I can understand that.  Especially with infants.  Seems like stuff always comes up after hours.

I’ve only been to the ER once for precaution, but that was after my 4Runner rolled over 4-5 times.  I was able to climb out and nothing more than some minor cuts and lots of bruises.  I was sitting on the curb when the first fire truck rolled up.  The firefighter said based on the look of the scene, that they’d be pulling out a body.  Amazed as the durability of that 4Runner.

I almost feel sorry for Rick, at least as sorry as one could feel for someone who runs a propaganda organization. My guess is that he surrounds himself with people that agree with him and nobody was willing to point out the obvious of what a horrible idea it is to run for Mayor in a city as corrupt as Honolulu during a time of populist outrage. Now he is stuck to a bunch of swamp creatures who are not long for this world, and his only hope is to go full-on Trump wild card populist, but he just does not have it in him. He knows what the machine would do to him in revenge, and his whole calculation to run in the first place was was probably something along the lines of swooping in on the tail end of a mild pandemic and looking like a big hero.

Imagine his disappointment

Saw videos of what was reported as Blangiardi leaving a party for his birthday recently that was attended by 10+ people in an indoor venue.  But that's not all, he was lipping off at folks leaving the venue.  Wonder how come that's not making the local news?  Hmm

Now folks are posting more of his rants on SM.  Wonder how that will progress. . .
