Democracy equates to mob rule.

If you want your rights dictated to you by popular consensus, then you're a bigger fool than we give you credit for.

If we were a true democracy, every one in Hawaii would be living under laws and restrictions voted on by the states of New York, California, Pennsylvania and Illinois.  Together, they represent a population almost 25M people more than Texas and Florida combined.  Those six are the most heavily populated in the US.

When you ask for Democracy at the Federal level, you are necessarily relinquishing democratic rule at the state level.  Because, to do so would mean ripping up the Constitution and vacating the Representative Democracy (Republic) we have had for more than 200 years.

p.s. Socrates died a very long time before the US and our "great experiment" ever existed.  In fact, he was born some 470 years before Christ.  Add another 2000+ years to that, and I'm not so sure we should be following what he said about political ideologies and applying them 2500 years later.

When the ideas taught 2000 years ago align with the ideas that have worked throughout time (or demonstrated why other ideas failed throughout time), those ideas are a valuable source of knowledge -- learn from others so we don't have to make the same mistakes.

But trying to twist what Socrates may have said once into a straw argument (you must like totalitarianism) tells me he doesn't understand Socrates -- or democracy.

I didn't say that and it seems like you don't understand our government. You always want to bring up edge cases. You don't believe in democracy because it is mob rule? Okay the opposite rule by one person or a select few. The only way you seem to be able to support your position is through extreme edge cases.  The only response you have that Trump and his supporters are a threat to democracy is that democracy is bad? You are proving the article correct.

What "edge case" did I bring up?

And I do not "always" want to bring up edge cases.  That would be the member known as EEF.

Do you know what an "edge case" is?  I don't think you know.

What the difference between and "edge case" and an "extreme edge case"?

Where did I say that Trump/his supporters are a threat to democracy?  I pointed out that Democracy does not exist at the federal level.  How can anyone be a treat to something that does not exist?

Democracy in the United States
The United States is a representative democracy.
This means that our government is elected by citizens.
Here, citizens vote for their government officials.
These officials represent the citizens’ ideas and concerns in government.
Voting is one way to participate in our democracy.
Citizens can also contact their officials when they want to support or change a law.
Voting in an election and contacting our elected officials are two ways that
Americans can participate in their democracy.

Theoretically.

Then there is reality ....

In the century-plus since the number of House seats first reached its current total of 435
(excluding nonvoting delegates), the representation ratio has more than tripled – from one
representative for every 209,447 people in 1910 to one for every 747,184 as of last year.

Last year = 2017

https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/05/31/u-s-population-keeps-growing-but-house-of-representatives-is-same-size-as-in-taft-era/

If YOU had nearly 750,000 people to represent in Congress, how would you know if you are satisfying most of your constituents via your votes?

There's no way to do it.  That's why Representatives only have 3 "masters":  their party, big money donors and lobbyists.

The squeaky wheel syndrome.  Few issues that affect "We, the people" ever get attention unless it makes national news.

Here are the top 10 states in order of number of residents per representative in their STATE LEGISLATURES:

https://ballotpedia.org/Population_represented_by_state_legislators

In case you're interested, the numbers for Hawaii are:

2010:  26,673 /Rep
2020:  28,535   /Rep

2010:  54,412 /Senator
2020:  58,211 /Senator

So, even at the state level, each HI representative has a over 25,000 people to represent, and the HI senators have over 55,000 people.

These are small numbers compared to US Congressional ratios.  This is why, if you want something done, it's better (easier?) to get a state official to help than it is your US reps.

Our federal government is using tax dollars to gain more and more power over the states -- the Red Flag funding proposal is just one example.  The more this trend continues, the worse things are going to get in this so-called "Democracy" of Washington, DC.

Retired conservative Judge J. Michael Luttig who served as an informal adviser to Mike Pence told the congressional committee that former President Donald Trump and his allies are a 'clear and present danger’ to American democracy

I am in agreement with you here but you are riling up a crowd that isn't going to agree with you no matter how much evidence comes forward.

So what a conservative judge “states” makes it fact? Riling you a crowd no matter how much evidence is brought forward? So court recent court proceedings that were not about to indict were for what? Another thought experiment?  ::)

Guess it guilty unto proven innocent, especially with folks who think they’re righteous…

When then AG Eric Holder was subpoenaed for Fast and Furious he claimed executive privilege and was never arrested. Nothing came out of an operation that resulted in the death of a US govt agent. No special committee.
