100 Republicans in the Senate sent a letter to the credit card companies asking very direct, relevant questions about the new policies re" gun charges.

Also, a dozen or Senators also stated they intend to hold hearings on the issue and seek legislation barring such practices which violate Constitutionally protected rights.

From the letter:
Quote
"Due to the nature of the information collected from merchants when processing a transaction,
you will have no ability to know what is being purchased; as such, the purported benefits for
detecting suspicious purchases falls flat on face value," the Republicans wrote. "Given that, it
is clear that these changes are being pushed for much more nefarious reasons, and is likely
only step one with calls for declining to process gun sales altogether coming in the near future."

You are a little late to the party.
Do you have to get permission to buy a gun in Hawaii?
Can you use a firearm to protect yourself in a public place?
We are a police state.

Question is how we deal with it in a peaceful and legal manner?

I also learned that Red State AG's are up in arms about this situation also but I can't seem to find the article I saw or read.  Sorry.

But I just wanted to make the point that there is push back against the credit card companies which is a good thing.

In my opinion I just cannot see how establishing a code for firearm related sales through credit cards will help curb or fight gun crimes/mass shootings but I can clearly see how this can balloon into an invasion of privacy for citizens.  This is BS to me.

Is Discover doing the codes? Paypal?

I’ve got a credit I’d like to use from a recent return but still have to pay shipping

I’m beginning to think a peaceful and legal resolution is slowly becoming unattainable. 1776 1861 comes to mind…… :-[

The long pole in this "BS Tent" is that the codes will simply identify a business as a "gun retailer."  So when anyone goes in to buy guns, ammo, a bass boat, hunting gear, fishing tackle or just yoga mats, the code for "firearm sale" will be assigned.

There is so little information about WHAT was bought, the code is basically useless, which is one reason this change was denied at least twice before -- that's before the Dems in Congress who deicide which banks get bailouts and special rules wrote them letters.

What we know will occur is someone will commit a mass crime, the gun will have been bought on a credit card and "flagged", and questions will be asked.  The follow-on will be stricter scrutiny of "Gun Retailer" purchases, more red tape, and all in an effort to discourage retailers from offering firearms and shooting supplies.

Most concerning is that people planning to use guns for crimes will opt to use cash or buy second-hand.  No way for the new code to track the people they pretend to want to track.

Update:

Visa, Mastercard Pause Work on Code Aimed at Tracking Gun Purchases

-- Discover, AmEx also plan to delay implementation of new code
-- Payment giants have said code was unlikely to have much impact

Quote
Visa and MasterCard have paused efforts to implement a merchant code that
would identify firearms and firearms related purchases Thursday, according to
Bloomberg.

The companies, alongside Discover Financial Services, opted to pause their work
just days after announcing a start date, as multiple pieces of legislation were
introduced to block the International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO)
code that is specially designated for gun purchases, according to Bloomberg.
The initiative was first announced in September after the ISO approved the code,
leading multiple Republican leaders and gun advocates to condemn the initiative
as a back-door firearms registry.

“These major credit card companies came to the correct conclusion. However,
they shouldn’t just ‘pause’ their implementation of this plan—they should end it
definitively. Discover and American Express should do the same,” Republican
Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen said in a statement Thursday. “This
measure will do nothing to improve public safety while invading consumer privacy
and inviting coordination between corporations and government agencies to erode
Americans’ fundamental right to keep and bear arms.”

Knudson led a 24-state coalition in September that called on the CEOs of Visa,
MasterCard, and American Express to abandon the initiative, saying it would
potentially violate consumer protection and antitrust laws.“It’s extremely disappointing
to see credit card companies cave to pressure from international bodies and adopt
this measure that will do nothing to improve public safety,” Knudsen said at the time.

I hope no one believes they "halted". What really happened was the AFT told them to make a statement of a false stoppage cause they dont want cash purchases.

Should have said HOUSE, not SENATE.
