Only a fool would rent an EV. It's too humbug if one has to "refill".

From the video/article I posted, the guy driving halfway across country said he didn't save any money by "refilling" his batteries versus what he would have paid for filling a gas tank.

Also, is it even feasible for you to find a charging station near the rental return so you can return it "full?"  They require a full tank when you give the car back or you pay a higher-than-market price per gallon for what's missing.  I assume the same fee system would exist for drained batteries?

If you miss a payment it shuts off the AC and starts playing annoying sounds on the speakers. If you miss another it reposesses itself and drives back to the dealership

The price for a used rental Tesla on the Hertz website in Vegas is a rip off. They're basically going for the market used rate.  NEvermind that used cars get much more milage on them and abuse.

The numbers are done.

Been having to pay to charge since August 2023.  Waited a few months to get the baseline cost I pay to charge every month.  About $50.  When I last had an ICE, I would fill up once every 5-6 weeks.  At that time, gas I paid was $3.65 (91 octane? I don't remember, but its the most expensive one of the 3 choices).  This means I spend about $35 a month on gas with my old car.

Both cars I don't drive as much.  But when I had an ICE, I out on like 5K miles a year.  With my EV, I now put on much less than that because I don't drive to work Mon-Fri (bicycle).  So I'm now paying more to charge the EV than needing for a gas car.

Imagine if I drived more, then the cost to have the EV would still be greater than an ICE.  So the only reason to get an EV for a climate hoax person is so they feel like they're saving the planet.

Hawaii's high cost of electricity is the problem.

Honolulu cost of gas is $4.53 v national avg is $3.18, or 42% higher.

Honolulu cost of electricity is 44c a kwh v national avg of 16c or 175% higher.  Who knows what it'll go up to when the Lahaina lawsuits are factored in.

The efficiency you get from the electric car goes to waste and ends up costing the same or more per mile.  Add in Teslas use 1% charge a day when sitting unused.

You don't save money unless you have solar.

Hawaii does have the highest cost-per-kWh in the country.  But that's only a factor here -- it's not "the" problem.

The same problem exists on the mainland.  Look at the FOX video on driving 800 miles -- from Chicago to New York.

Quote
Despite the longer travel time, Flock noted that the cost of charging was similar to the
cost of gas for gas-powered vehicles, leaving no significant cost savings for electric vehicle
drivers. Tesla’s sticker prices are high, with an average price of $65,000, making them a
significant investment for most drivers.

So, given the added cost of an Ev over a comparable gas guzzler. and factoring in the cost of fuel over the time you owned the Tesla as well as maintenance and repair, there may never be a break even point for the EV owner unless gas prices sky rocket.

Most people I know comparison shop for huge expenses like transportation.  Among other things, fuel economy is a big issue.  Saving the planet comes second to saving money for most families, especially those raising children.

$65k is about what I paid for my first house in 1991.

There's problems with EV's and they're not for everyone.  Especially those living in colder climates or routinely taking long drives.  An actual Tesla owner would adjust their driving habits in those conditions.

In the video they had a standard 220mi range Tesla.  They should've had a long range 340mi range one which would've made the trip a lot easier.  Driving fast eats up battery power so Tesla drivers will adjust their speed down a bit to save on charger time.  Heating the cabin also eats up a lot of juice so people rely more on the heated seats instead.  It also appears they had Sentry mode on, which is a great security system but it eats up battery power when the car is idle.   These are compromises EV drivers have to make for these types of trips. It's the shorter trips and urban driving in temperate climates and cheaper home charging is where the Teslas shine in efficiency.

A person routinely doing 800 mile trips in the cold would be better off with a hybrid.  Hybrids are the car most people should be looking at.

But there are many other reasons people want EV's.  Lots of power, better handling, easy to drive, low maintenance, and safety factor.  I'm very satisfied with mine.

How much is the mark up on the 340mi model compared to the 220mi model?

As the video said, you have to sit down and plan your trip in detail to make sure you can continue to get from A to B on a single charge.  That's something that should be easy to fix -- more charging locations no matter where you are , just like gas stations.  sometimes you can't plan on every contingency such as getting lost (even with GPS) or changing your route because you saw a billboard or an ad for something you'd like to visit.  He also said the estimated range the car provided was more than actual range between charges.  That might have been the cold, but he didn't say.

I don't have anything against EVs in general besides the battery issues -- mining the lithium, etc.  What i am against is the government doing what CA is doing -- that being trying to ban gas engine vehicles by a certain year before the technology and power production problems have been completely addressed.

The new variable electricity rates test program for Hawaii looks like it can help non-solar EV owners.  That 17 cent day rate would cut a charging costs by 60%.  Even the overnight rate is cheaper than the current 43 cents.

Oahu

>> Daytime (9 a.m.-5 p.m.): 17 cents per kilowatt-hour

>> Evening peak (5-9 p.m.): 52 cents per kWh

>> Overnight (9 p.m.-9 a.m.): 35 cents per kWh

I remember -40F ambient on the flight line in North Dakota.
We all plugged our cars in as SOP.
Even gas engines won't work if not heated,
Oil get too viscous to start.

At that temp, tires don't work -- they stay rigid with one flat side!  Ka-LUNK - Ka-LUNK!!

Radiators and coolant freeze -- 100% glycol might make it to -40, but most run 50/50 water/antifreeze for best cooling vs. freeze-resistance.  That's not taking wind chill into account.

Windshields crack with the smallest of pebble impacts.  Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage was the only base I ever saw with their own SafeLite windshield repair and replacement shop.

I can't see myself living near the Arctic during the Winter months.
