Other than the battery, tires are the next most expensive maintenance on EV's.
EV's require tire replacement at about 28k miles, half the distance of ICE due to
instantaneous response
EVs are heavier. Heavier weight necessitates tires with a higher weight rating and they will end up wearing out faster.
You have to purchase energy-efficient tires that are specific to the EV due to optimum range/wear as well as noise considerations
EV tires are also more expensive, about $150-$200 each

I wonder if EV tires would act like an extended tread life tire on a regular car?

It's a good thing EVs will save the planet.  The almost doubling of the number of tires being used and discarded won't matter, right?

And consider all the money you'll save on gas and oil changes.  That money can offset the cost of tires.   :geekdanc:

Besides the standard proximity sensors, Tesla's have a radar system that other cars don't have.  One can watch on the pad to see if the lane is clear to merge, you will see an actual image of a car next to and in front of you.  It even shows an image of a bus or a human walking and their dog if they're walking their dog too.  And this isn't a camera image, go google it to see.

Then add in the self driving technology that no other car has yet.

IDK if other makes have this, but Tesla's sentry system comes with the car. It's a 360 degree camera that records.  Also it detects movement and alerts anyone near by with a honk and flash of lights that they're being recorded.  Also 1 can view the cameras from their phone live stream.  Tesla can also allow someone to drive your car via your app on your phone. So if you're out of town and a friend needs to use the car, you can allow them to.  They don't need the "keys" to use the car.  You can also turn your AC on from your phone, lock and unlock doors, open trunk/frunk, schedule roadside assistance or repair appointments, limit the speed a valet can go.  This is all from your phone.  IDK if any other maker has all this tech that is standard with all Tesla's.

And with Starlink, one can watch Netflix inside their Tesla, You Tube, basically internet access.  I think some cars can do this. But Mrs. CMO's 2021 Honda HRV, she cannot watch Netflix or Youtube.

Again, none of this is unique to EVs and therefore irrelevant to the cost of repair an EV vs a internal combustion engine.

It actually is a big deal. Again per the claims adjusters I spoke to, the mechanic industry is a dying breed.  They're getting older and unwilling to learn the new tech and refer to my post about investing in the expensive equipment for each make of vehicle.  Like others mentioned, with electrical type systems (battery powered) 1 has to be very careful.  I mean I've had friends (ICE) short out their entire fuse box by touching the wires wrong when installing a subwoofer. Luckily, fuses are cheap. But some situations, it's more than just the $0.50 fuses that shorted. So multiply this factor with EV's.  And add in most younger people are not willing to put in the labor to do this industry.  Mainly it's the die hard car enthusiast who continue the work force.  This also applies to painting cars. The turn around for both are very high because most don't want to work that hard for the pay an employee gets.  And to own a shop, you need XP first, then the bankroll.  Then add in the owners don't want their kids to work as hard as they do.  The philosophy is they want their children to work smarter, not harder.

So in theory an ICE should be more complicated to work on due to more moving parts, but in reality they're not. How many EV"s do you see at any non-makers repair shop?  And in HI, Teslas are everywhere.  I have yet to see any Tesla at a mom n pop repair shop.

Even with side mirrors, they have sensors in them that require calibration and readings to repair. For older cars, when someone hit your mirror while you're parked on the road, it was simple bolt on and bolt off and paint.  Then it became electrical adjusting, so now plug in and bolt on and paint. Now they have collision warnings. So enter the calibrations.  Same for front windshields. Many new cars have collision warnings that read not only thru the bumper, but the windshield (Subaru is 1 maker besides Teslas that I know of).

For additional censors that an EV has that an ICE doesn't is the battery, flow of juice, distribution of juice, cut off for over charging.  Some cars have battery warmers for cold seasons.  This is in very simple terms, there are a lot more technical that IDK how to explain.

Maybe you don't see a lot of Teslas at shops because they don't require as much maintenance?

Obviously both cars will require some types of maintenance and since they require different types of maintenance you need different types of training. As the market reacts to this change there will be some hickups and may mean additional costs for EV repair. Having said that, EV cars simply have less to go wrong with the powertrain than an internal combustion engine.

True Teslas don't require much maintenance, but the reason you won't see them at independent repair shops is Tesla doesn't sell parts. You either take it to Tesla, or buy used parts of Ebay and hope they work. If they require any programming, you will be back at Tesla and they may not do the programming.  They may charge you for the whole repair, so you don't even try, you just take it to Tesla

I really liked my truck, gas prices was killing my budget. By pure luck I was able to acquire a Prius Prime. So far I’m liking it. A lot of trade offs. Much less power, much less room, low
Advantages smaller, easier to park, tech is awesome, awesome gas mileage.

I hope you guys on here who have Prius cars don't drive them like most of those owners do. Accelerating super slow and driving slow trying to maximize already outstanding mpg.  Just drive the damn things like a normal car.

You asked:

"how is a Tesla proximity sensor any different than my Ford's proximity sensor in terms of maintenance? My Ford has a computer in it getting input from many sensors and controlling hundreds of functions, how does an electrical power train make that different from an ICE powertrain?"

I was responding to the 1st part of your question as to why a Tesla's proximity sensor is much more complicated over your Ford's one.

Others responded to your 2nd part of your statement.

This is incorrect. I pass the Tesla repair shop almost daily and it's often full house.  The only time it was constantly empty is when there is a shortage of replacement parts.  They don't let the cars just sit in the shop for months while they wait. What's good about Tesla is they give you Uber credit if they don't have a loaner to borrow while your car is being fixed/maintained.

Then I know mechanics here and in Vegas for Tesla and they disagree with your general statement of the above.

*edit:

The main thing I can see that EV's don't have to do over ICE is the annual changemyoil.

For my 2008 Lexus IS250 which I traded in in 2020, I've only done the following with regard to powertrain type stuff:

1) Changemyoil annually

Other stuff:

Never replaced the radiator or fluid

Never replaced or added power steering fluid

Never replaced the spark plugs

Changed brakes that included the 4 disc once.  Assume break fluid was replaced.

Changed all 4 tires once

Changed 3 different power locks as they stopped working shortly after buying the car. 4th power lock broke, but I didn't want to spend $700 to replace since it was the rear door which I don't use often

Had the entire interior dash and door panels replaced due to class action lawsuit settlement.  This was about 6 years after I got the car, so it was awesome to have  a brand new interior.

Change power window motor on 2 diff windows.

Your assumption is possibly correct, or maybe not.

Changing brake pads doesn't necessarily require replacing the brake fluid.  The most they might do is bleed the brakes to remove any air in the hydraulic lines.

Based on your make/model/year, the manufacturer normally states in the owner's manual a recommended brake fluid replacement interval.  That can range from around 45K miles to infinity (i.e. Never).

Replacing brake pads or rotors does not require tat you replace brake fluid.
Fluid should only be replaced or topped off when you see that the level is dropping or the fluid is dirty.
In either of those cases you have a leak or a deterioration of brake lines.
Another scenario is if you replace brake calipers in which case again, you've opened up the closed loop system.

Other only reason would be if the fluid gets overheated and your brake fluid light goes on.

New $7500 EV tax credit coming Jan 1st 2023. So if you're going to buy 1, wait till next year if can.

But there are requirements

IIRC

Car has to be made in USA, so our Toyota's mainly come from Japan, so this wont qualify (VIN begins with a "J").  But ask  your salesman.

I heard a blip on the news this morn that the value cannot exceed $55K.  If this is true, then for Tesla's, only the Model 3 (sedan) qualifies.  Which you can order one base model for $48K.  You can  no longer buy one for $30's (lul, bruh, paypal, proven in court).  The next cheapest is the Model Y (SUV) in the $60's.

IDK if this credit is like the last one where each maker was allowed X amount to give. Tesla was the first one to reach this max years ago.

Electronic vehicles make it easy for big tech to track you and see where you go.  These may already be getting built into non-EV cars.  If you are going to where you're not supposed to be, it's also possible to have big tech shut your car off.  Bye bye privacy.

Since the vehicle is not manually steered anymore, one of my good friends think that it's conceptually possible to "off" someone by programming their EV car to crash into a wall or drive off a cliff at 80mph.  Could be due to human errors.  AI can also make that choice to steer your vehicle.
