Not saying this is one of them but good drums just aren't that cheap. Just depends on what the users expectation is.

How about these?

I knew it sounded too good to be true.

Stick to surplus 75 rd russian/romanian top loaders or pre-ban chinese 75rd and 100rd open back drums.  The general consensus on most forums is that the new Korean open back drums are worthless in comparison.

Just curious how much does a loaded drum mag weigh?

I'm thinking of going with a MI Industries optic rail for my SLR-101 to mount an Aimpoint Micro.  I've heard that the milled receiver can be tough to fit some aftermarket handguards.  When I get serious about it, I'll probably contact MI to see if they have any experience with their rails and that particular model.

Chinese 75-rd drum fully loaded is right around 5lbs.

Besides a drum magazine and 30 rounders I really wouldn't do any modifications. an AK just works and as beautiful as it is.

Not trying to cause an online riot but I wanted to understand what it is about AKs that so many people like.

Just to be clear I don't have an AK and I don't have an AR (I used to have a Romy AK that I really tried to like believe me I really did, but personally the AK platform just feels a bit more awkward).  I am considering buying one or the other after the lines at HPD go down but I want to know if I am missing something about the AK system.

Things I don't really like about the AK are having to rock the mags into place, the mag release tab at the front of the trigger guard, the safety that you can't really easily engage/disengage (without modding or installing a Krebs aftermarket part), no bolt hold open feature (without modding or installing an aftermarket part), non-adjustable Warsaw length stock and the location of the rear sight in relation to the front sight.

I know that these things can all be overcome with training but for me that still doesn't take away the fact that the system just seems more cumbersome.

I bought an AK awhile ago and I like the punch of the 7.62 round but in my experience ammo prices aren't that much different and it also seems to me that reliability is about equal in the AKs and ARs that I have seen... both can and will break down.

Am I missing something critical here??  Thanks, yeah?!?

AKs are just the gun you either love or hate and for those who love to hate them, they still want it to be the yin(AK) to their yang (AR15). The proliforation of xbox games and zombie movies make it a "cult classic" among the causal firearms owner. The preppers who watch too much youtube swear by their reliability. I can rattle off reasons why you should get one over the other and vice versa but what it really comes down to is what do you want out of it? Get both if you can. Put equal number of rounds in them and see which one you are best with for whatever your purposes are and let that be the deciding factor and sell the one that you are least proficient with. Or keep both like most people do. Either way let your own experiences dictate your choice not other peoples' biased opinions. BTW I got 1 of each. I love and hate both of them and plan on getting a few more. Just remember 2 is 1 and 1 is none!

I used to be an AK hater.

I wanted nothing to do with the commie crap gun.

They were cheap and inaccurate.

Then I started shooting them.

They digested absolutely everything.

They never ever malfunctioned.

They were actually pretty accurate.

They had a natural beauty, they didn't need quad rails, flip up sights, or other fancy doodads to work.

On the other hand you could put on collapsible stock, pica tinny rails, red dots, ergonomic grips and damn near anything else you want.

They have culture and history, they're made in different countries with different characteristics. Heck some even have dimples.

If loving AK's is wrong, I don't want to be right.

Any shops on the island that sell mods for the ak? I own a SAM7 A1R and want to do a collapsible stock and optic. Any recommendations as far as parts?

Wow that's my first post and I've been registered for over two years! :wtf:

If the SAM7 has 2 tangs to convert to collapsible you'll have to remove the bottom tang or both, depending on the stock, though options for milled receivers are few and far between. Check out ACE receiver blocks and buttstocks

X-ring has the most AK mods, as far as I know.

Dexter brings in a pretty good assortment of AK stuff.

He can also order anything you want.

I've noticed their prices are very competitive with online vendors (plus shipping)

U have a CAA tube on one of my SAM7's.

I did however have to cut off the bottom tang.

Rogah rogah... Mahalo gents for the responses!!  I don't consider myself a AR fanboy, and I was just trying to see what I was missing. Probably gotta take a second look at the AK based on all the responses. I do like the look of Krinks, but shoot, SBRs are no-nos here...  Thanks, guys!!

I have both AR and AK's.  I started out shooting the 16 in the Army then later picked up AK's. Now I have 1 AR and more than my share of AK's.  For me it is the classic looks and rugged simplicity that I like.  I'm not a "old guy", but I like old school stuff.  I love the wood furniture on AK's and classics guns like the Garand, M1 Carbine, SKS, Mosin, etc.

Another big reason I like AK's is the feel of the action as it cycles.  AR's are IMHO boring as hell to shoot.  When I shoot my AK's, I can hear and feel the action working and its so much more interesting.........hard to explain.  Kinda like the new computer controlled sports cars vs a old school carb / aggressive cam rumble of a V8.  Both can be fast, but the feel is a world of difference.

I have a gun if I want to shoot tiny groups, I have a gun with all the rails I'll ever need.  I have guns for shtf, zombies, whatever..  Now I base my gun buys on reliability and pure fun to shoot.factor.  I gives a damn if its practical, or the most accurate.

The point is,  get what is most fun for you and you will always enjoy it.  If you change your mind down the road and choose to sell it, PM me first
