4 years of CCW in Honolulu
« on: November 14, 2023, 11:40:41 PM »
Can you folks confirm that if we get our CCW permit 1/1/2024 that it will be good for 4 years.
I see a pattern:
4 years firearm safety until renewal
4 years of CCW
4 years to wait for HPD certified instructors
4 years HPD firearms department will get a long vacation 😂

I take it you're not a big believer in 4-play?

Young Guns posted on their IG page that they have CCW classes for january and february scheduled with Butch Helemano as the instructor
it's a combo class: hawaii and Arizona for $275.
it says the HI ccw will be good for 4 years
I guess Butch got approved as a HI instructor?

I don't think this post says what we think.  I too thought that Butch was approved to teach the HI CCW that's valid for 4 years come 1/1/24.

But the post makes statements like "Hawaii CCW valid for 4 years".  No statement on if this class is valid to get the new CCW.  Also the bottom that has the description of what the course contains, mentions nothing of what the HI CCW requires on 1/1/24.  Like there's no classroom stuff listed, just shooting stuff.
IMO, this looks like a training class to get better at CCWing.

YG did make an error recently when they posted that their handgun safety class meets the new requirements on 1/1/24, only to post a few weeks later that HPD called them and that they're wrong.

I called YG and they didn't know, but assumed its good for 1/1/24 requirments. They told me to call Butch to find out and I left a message.

I spoke to Butch.  He said that his Jan classes are for the 4 year CCW under the new rules 1/1/24.

Edit

If I'm reading it correctly, you don't need a handgun safety class to get a CCW.

I'm assuming that we will have to take another lecture and exam with another proficiency test.  And not just a proficiency test for the "4 year" activation on 1/1/2024.

The new CCW requirements added in mental health stuff. Butch mentioned that he already teaches this, so IDK if he will update his affidavit or can use the existing one.

So far all I have seen people mention Honolulu County.  I am assuming these new regulations apply to all counties. Please correct me if I am wrong.

It does. But whether all counties mandated these already via ordinance or their chiefs rules IDK.

My friend's brother Ainokea carried a Glock 17 with the 17 round mag on Oahu from 1990 till he died in 2017.  He only had to use it once in self defense when 4 guys followed him home and was planning to assault him.  He fired a shot in their direction, and they ran back to their car and dug out.  Nothing happened after that and he never saw those guys again.

27 years Ainokea carry, one SD discharge during that time and no legal ramifications.   I could live with that.  But no one here does anything illegal.

This sucks because all of us who have their CCW permit will have to take another class and written exam and proficiency test to renew our CCW AND take another firearms safety course that is HPD approved

I was just looking forward to renew my proficiency test. Ughh  :shake:

Why not just add an addendum?
Because it's dumb to add an addendum?

I just renewed my CCW on the Big Island. PD said they will honor it and it will be valid until November 2024 even with the new rules. Hopefully they get all the new requirements and approved instructors squared away by then. Sucks that I have to redo all the trainings again but it is what it is.
