and...
https://www.khon2.com/local-news/makaha-man-dead-after-being-run-over-by-truck-he-was-trying-to-enter/

Family and friends of Derrick Hernandez Jr, 28, put up a memorial at the site near Makaha Beach on Monday. They told KHON2 he died early Monday morning from injuries he sustained after being run over by a pickup truck around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

According to police, Hernandez crashed his vehicle shortly before and then ran towards Farrington Highway. They said he tried to stop and enter multiple occupied vehicles.

But loved ones said he was likely disoriented after crashing his car, and that some witnesses told them he was asking for help in the middle of the street. Desperate for help, the family said that’s when he tried to get into the bed of a pickup truck.

But HPD said Hernandez made several attempts to reach into the truck’s driver-side window, and that’s when the 50-year-old driver accelerated, causing Hernandez Jr. to fall onto the road, and when she ran him over and took off.

Still illegal to do.  I hope the state drops charges, but I'm sure his family will have a say as you know, politics aren't involved with decision to prosecute.  Let's see if our prosecutors office needs more what they call "good PR".  IMO, it will be a waste of time and money because a reasonable person would believe that she's being car jacked. Sucks that she has to lawyer up.

The news stories are still lying that she was "tracked down" when in reality she turned herself in

Will the family sue the woman cause he wouldn't have died or she could've provided aid if she didn't drive away?

If the family sues, they nomo shame.

In another time and era, the family would've probably mourn their loss, then apologize to the woman who their family member traumatized.

Common sense does not prevail anymore.

Most who sue like this don't. I mean look at Outstanding Citizen of the year George Floyd. I feel bad for his daughter when she said "my daddy will change the world". She doesn't know the truth and I hope one day she will and accept it without freaking out.

Another attempted car jacking in Kailua. Man with a gun is trying.  Maybe he's just misunderstood and he's offering people his protection services?

Crime is down, Chief Logan said.  Maybe he was holding the report upside down.

It's becoming far too common. Police should publicly announce that they will refuse to arrest people who shoot or run over car jackers. Following orders of insane bureaucrats is making the problem worse.

Im hoping there's more to this story. As in, timing wasn't her friend. All HPD knew is she hit someone and ran. Then when they found her, they arrested her for the above statement. It was only after she was arrested, then HPD realized it was a car jacking.

Her calling 911 while she was driving away would hopefully help remedy this. But, people don't think when under stress. Especially those not in the self defense mindset.  So I give her pass for not calling 911.

In a general self defense situation, 1st to call 911 is usually the good guy.

This is very much a possibility. When the cops show up to this dirt bag on the ground he probably isn't admitting that he was trying to steal a car. Unless there is a witness that can clearly articulate it was a car jacking gone wrong, the cops are going to make an arrest on the driver who left the scene because there is probably cause that the driver violated the law. The question of justifiability comes later down the line and in serious cases is going to be made by the prosecutors.

It's not that simple.  Often time the cops aren't going to know for sure whether a shooting or car strike was against a car jacker or not.

Say it was simple, HPD wouldn't state this anyways. I mean, look at the sensitive places laws/ordinance. During the hearings, Logan only stated it's going to be difficult to enforce.  To bad we don't have a chief who knows what the constitution is.  It's not like he took 2 oaths to uphold the constitution.
