One woman I know is as liberal as you could ask for. Gorgeous, slender woman.
Raped by her father starting at age 4. Raped by her first boyfriend. Chased and escaped twice. And I got them impression that she wasn't telling me everything.
She is now a gun owner and fully supports CCW where it is legal. When asked why by her liberal friends she'll say something like
"Violence against women, especially sexual violence, is about power and dominance. Physical power and dominance, a playing field that is tilted heavily towards men by biology. Nothing tilts that field back towards a woman like a gun."

Its really basic for the most part. People with no experience with guns (or violence) see guns as a source of danger. Which is true: they certainly are dangerous. So are kitchen stoves, cars, ladders, etc. Those of us who are comfortable with guns and know how to handle them safely see them as also as a source of security.
Still, if someone DOESN'T know how to handle a gun with confidence and is going to be scared of it... CCW probably isn't a good option for them.
