yeah man, women carrying guns just perpetuates the violence. self defence isn't the answer, dancing and occupying public space will stop violence against women. fight the power man. yeah.

the first woman has a point, and it's actually right in line with many here, who think that regulation is the wrong way to do it, but that we should look at the underlying causes to create real change.

arming women is great, but she's right, that wont really solve the problem, just like banning guns wont solve gun violence.  there are deeper issues.

the first dude is dumb though.

i do think setting up a federal agency to assist in distributing condoms would be a decent idea.  it would probably save us more tax dollars in the long run with less single moms using up welfare.

I say what you suggest is impossible so long as american society keeps moving away from "old fashioned christian morals" and strong families.

CCW is not for everyone and will not stop every violent crime but it is something to be considered along with other things like risk management.

As for the condom thing, I have no issue with condoms but spending tax dollars and paying some "condom tsar" a few hundred thousand dollars a year is stupid.
I find it hard to believe the price and availability of condoms is the reason they aren't used enough. Young people make bad decisions especially when sex is involved.

One woman I know is as liberal as you could ask for. Gorgeous, slender woman.

Raped by her father starting at age 4. Raped by her first boyfriend. Chased and escaped twice. And I got them impression that she wasn't telling me everything.

She is now a gun owner and fully supports CCW where it is legal. When asked why by her liberal friends she'll say something like

"Violence against women, especially sexual violence, is about power and dominance. Physical power and dominance, a playing field that is tilted heavily towards men by biology. Nothing tilts that field back towards a woman like a gun."

::) Its really basic for the most part. People with no experience with guns (or violence) see guns as a source of danger. Which is true: they certainly are dangerous. So are kitchen stoves, cars, ladders, etc. Those of us who are comfortable with guns and know how to handle them safely see them as also as a source of security.

Still, if someone DOESN'T know how to handle a gun with confidence and is going to be scared of it... CCW probably isn't a good option for them.

its less about giving condoms to people who cant afford them, and more about promoting awareness instead of shying away from the fact of the matter.

im not saying CCW is a bad thing.  i think its a great thing.  but i do agree with the first person's assertion that we should try to look at the root cause of things, because isnt that why we're now fighting for our rights?  we're treating symptons instead of causes.

Violence is too deeply embedded in human nature; it will never go away. The best thing to do is just dance like a dumb ass and hope it goes away.

Well, to be fair, raising awareness via demonstrations IS a valid approach. It doesn't target specific violent events in any way but can help raise awareness on the part of people who can do something about it.

That said... yeah, not a very effective "action." Its a common mistake on the part of activists. They throw a demonstration to generate publicity about a subject but all it amounts to is a bunch of people saying "This is bad!!!" Very, very rarely is this accompanied by "... and THIS is what should be done about it."

A very common fallacy in our "democracy:" the idea that your opinion counts and that expressing it is participation. No, your opinions about solutions and proposed legislation count and the only ways to express them that matter are voting and writing to your representatives. Demonstrations are only effective if they amplify a movement's voice about a topic that legislators can address.

Violence against women is already illegal and universally recognized as bad in this country. So...... dance away, count the number of people who showed up and consider it a "success."
