Best 22lr Handgun
« on: April 02, 2013, 07:31:11 PM »
Im in the market for a 22lr handgun and I was wondering which one would be the best. I would be using it for target shooting and plinking. I dont really care much for the look of the rugur 22/45. I would like it to look more like a typical semi auto handgun for example s&w m&p 22
Gun control means using both hands.

I chose the Sig Sauer 1911 22LR pistol.  Nice "1911-ish" feel.  Heavier than you would think for a .22.  Got a good deal at the Gun Show -- brand new from local gun shop.

I just picked it up on Monday, so looking forward to breaking it in this weekend.

This pistol is branded for Sig by GSG, the actual manufacturer.  Here's a very in-depth review of the GSG 1911-22:

as mentioned the m&p22 and sig 1911-22 are good modern looking rimfires for about 400. im looking at picking up a walther ppk .22 the next time i find a centerfire handgun i gotta have.
i dont care for the neos at all. rather have a browning buckmark hunter...although its almost double the price of a neo.

i have the m&p22 and its a good gun. you can try it out on the 11th. usually needs high velocity ammo if you dont want to modify springs and do heavy polishing to help cycle the action.

S&W Model 41 - You could split a mongooses nuts at 100yds. I got one in '91 and it works flawlessly like its factory new after 22yrs and 1000's of rounds.

S&W Model 41 if you can find one.

Walther PPK in 22LR (mine got stolen) (never get a TPH)

I dont really like modern 22LR pistols.  They dont make them like they use to.

I have a Walther P-38 with a 22LR conversion. This is my favorite.

I shot a Sig 226 with the 22 conversion.  It is good.  But the gun i used needed some trigger work.

Damn I miss mine.  It made a bad shooter look good.  It was so accurate.  When I had it I the Ruger Mark 1 was a joke....now might have to buy a Mark III because I cant find a deal on a 41

If you have a centerfire pistol, then I would recommend getting a  .22 conversion kit. It would be a cash and carry deal or you could order online. No 3 trips to HPD for the long wait. You get the the same feel and trigger pull of your big gun with the ammo cost of a .22.

If you feel the need for another handgun, the best guns for accuracy is the S&W 41, Hammerli 208, Walther SSP/GSPs, and the Morini competition pistols at the steep prices.

Good accuracy pistols are the Ruger MKIII or 45/22, Browning Challengers, Beretta Neos, S&W 22A, HIgh Standard Citation and Trophy models.

Typical looking guns are less accurate, but are more compact and handier.

It all depends on what you plan to use it for.

I personally shoot a Ruger MKII Bull Barrel with a Volquartsen trigger kit and extended mag release for bulleye competition.
My Ruger SP101 .22 revolver with 4" barrel is my plinker/trainer and practice gun for my SP101 in 357Mag
My North American Arms Mini revolver in .22 is my good luck charm.
I also have a Kimber .22 conversion for my 1911 and a Ciener ,22 conversion for my Beretta 92F.

Take your pick:

22's rock and don't get the respect they deserve with the younger guys...  They don't know what they are missing.

Smith Model 17

22/45 Clark Custom

Smith Model 41...picked up at the recent gun show.  Registered today.

Ruger Mark II Government.  Great balance for offhand shooting.  No picture...

I shoot this one every day in my back yard.  40 shots from 1 co2 cartridge.  As accurate as anything you will find at the range and I have to say it might be my favorite pistol.

Got this one when I was 14...back when a kid could buy a gun.  No paperwork...no nothing.  I spent many, many days shooting this puppy.  It will shoot anything you feed it and requires hardly any care.

Rugers are great.  I would suggest a trigger job though.  The full Clark Custom models pop up on Gun Broker once in a while.  I recall seeing them in the $500 range before the frenzy.

Even without the trigger job they are darn great plinkers.

These guys are the masters.

Hey that sig, is it the one with the rosewood grips? I was looking at that over at kona guns. It is heavy for a 22 but i like it let me know how it shoots

I have a Beretta Neos.
fun gun to shoot, and its cheap.
rail on top to mount optics.
i've put 500+ rounds thru it, no problems.

i also have a Ruger LCR 22
not great at longer distances.  its a short barrel DAO.
but i like it for what it is.

i hear the Ruger SR22 is a nice gun.

Nice Bunker.  What grips?  I like.

I put some Herrett stocks on mine recently and not sure if I'll keep them on.

I had a Clark trigger job and Bo-Mar style rear sight installed.  It's a sweet shooting machine.

M&P (well Walther produced) 22 here.  It's been an excellent gun for plinking/range fun and teaching as well.  Ammo is cheap and the gun is relatively inexpensive.  I bought mine in the $380 range.  The Beretta Neo is another gun I'd like to try, but I probably won't get another 22 handgun for a while.  Maybe a 22 lr revolver next though.
