Pretty girl :(   I think that would ruin me from continuing police work.
Assault Rifle? What I have here is an Anti-Assault Rifle.

Good observation, didnt even think of that.

No matter what, still a very sad story (except for the criminal dying).

It's sad all the way around.  Trouble is the criminal forced everyone into this.  Can't really lay the blame on anyone except him.

The bad guy had served 9 years in prison and was wanted for parole violation, so by law, he couldn't legally even have a gun.

THIS!!!!!!!

I really feel for the family, especially her twin.

Clearly prison didn't teach him anything.  Repeat offenders need to be dealt with HARSHLY and SWIFTLY.

I don't understand how this guy above and others can be arrested multiple times.  Maybe after the 3rd arrest, you're just not getting it.

I propose a platform a thousand yards out in the ocean equipped with a medieval catapult.  Felons with multiple arrests will be subject to medieval catapult.  This will also be televised with all commercial ads paying for the operators of catapult, tv time, and whatever is leftover goes to aloha united way.

I just don't understand why a lone police officer would go into a house where there's a known hostage situation and escalate the situation like he did.

Some areas down here, especially the weed and seed areas have a 3 strike rule.

What the LEO knew and the sequence in which he knew it is still under investigation.  It's life and death/split second decision.  Without knowing all the facts it's tough for us to judge him.

It is difficult situation for everyone. I can tell you that when doors are being kicked in (down range) that same split second decision takes practice and lots of it. It is not how many rounds you can fire, it is how well placed those shots can be. That comes from muscle memory which is obtained from LOTS and LOTS of practice. I don't know how many LEOs practice CQB. I pray for him and the victims family, they both are going through hell.

I've proposed an island somewhat north of the 60th parallel where repeat violent criminals get put on it with a gun, ammo, a week's supply of food, and the clothes on their backs.  Subsistence staples and medical supplies would be dropped to the island once a week.

Think about it.

All the other prisoners also have guns.

Well, there is that stuffy old Eighth Amendment to that stuffy old Bill Of RIghts to consider.

I do believe that the radical and crazy notion that the Founders meant what they said, is gradually soaking through the judicial system.

eh, if I can put 10 rounds into a 4 inch hole at 25 yards (and I'm not even that good of a shooter) with a stock glock, a trained LEO should have been able to down a suspect without killing the hostage!

Hi sliver -- I don't mean to single anyone out but read up on this thing called "Survival Stress Response".  There's a bunch of good books written on this but here a good report I found while Googling.

http://mikeleesolutions-web.sharepoint.com/Documents/Survival%20Stress%20in%20Law%20Enforcement.pdf

Page 8, Expected Effects of Survival Stress

1. Increased heart rate
2. Auditory exclusions - not hearing things
3. Visual problems - tunnel vision, loss of near vision, loss of depth perception and loss of night vision
4. Freezing - delayed reaction can result in damage or death
5. Deterioration of motor skills - loss of fine motor skills
6. Vasoconstrictions

Page 12 has a nice chart showing what can get affected depending on heart rate.

Page 15 lists some things that can be done to prevent or reduce these effects.
I think, therefore I am armed.

while everyone's debating whether or not you can accurately empty 8 rounds in a stress situation, the question i have was, is, if there was a hostage, why would you just dump your whole mag at the guy?  that's kind of asking for collateral damage, no?

This is why some of us think the first round may have been an attempt to one shot the bad guy and the rest to put him down after he (may) have shot the gal in the head.

At Rebello's wake on Tuesday night, "some friends wondered if the shooting could have been prevented and said police should have waited for backup. Earlier, her godfather said there should have been negotiations before shots were fired."
