The modifications you list compromise reliability.  There's nothing wrong with either rifle, but loading with stripper clips takes good technique.  Practice more with the SKS stripper clips (your thumb needs to be as far back as possible); as long as you don't mess it up with aftermarket parts, an SKS is every bit as reliable as an AK, and generally more accurate to boot.

(All the Moisins I've seen [Russian M91/30s and M44s, and Chinese Type 53s] have been zeroed with the bayonet fixed or extended.)

I'd leave the mosin as is in the wood stock, just put spacers and free float it. Can be done for cheap under $25

Put the money into the sks cause its has more options to accept optics and mags, even a drum.

If you have a type 53 I wouldn't bother and build a m44.  The type 53s went as refined as the russian model and that is saying a lot when youconisder russian built 17 million mosins.  The chinese did a far better job bbulding thier sks and aks

Sounds like you want a higher capacity and /or faster reloading system.  IMHO both guns are best as is.  I had a sks in a tapco and it was ok, but I only used the stock mag.  I don't like how the tapco grip is held on by a bolt threaded into the plastic stock with no nut on the other side.  If you really don't want another platform, I'd say you'd be fine as is.  If 10 rds of x39 or 1 rd of x54 w/ fireball doesn't scare it away, more probably wont help  :D
If I had to pick though, I'd go get a high cap sks mag and see if my gun liked it.

Quick side note I think it's $179 for 440 rounds of 7.62x54r at ogc. Not 880.  ???
Every ones a good person. You just might be catching them in a bad time of their life.

IMO both are good firearms as is and you won’t improve reliability by adding aftermarket stuff.

Regarding high-capacity SKS mags, there are some aftermarket mags and kits that work halfway decent but nowhere close to the original configuration when it comes to reliability. The SKS internal 10- round stock magazines rarely fail and more often than not, if you experience a jam in this configuration, it's likely not the mags fault. I’d recommend keeping it stock and use/master the stripper clips but that’s just my opinion.

Depending on what specific firearms you are considering modifying, there may be other considerations. You may be playing the 922(r) game, 10 or less imported parts, and keep in mind a Chinese SKS only has 14 applicable parts to begin with and a US made magazine is two parts (body & follower). Another consideration if your firearm is a C&R rifle is any modification you make to that firearm voids its C&R status and 922(r) then applies. If high-capacity mags is where you are going with your post, why go through all the headache and end up with less reliability than your starting point. I’d just invest your money in a good quality AK and end up with three good reliable rifles. JMHO

Dirtylickins, hope you will post some before and after pics when it's all done. BTW...what type of SKS is it under all of that and what did that cost you, if you don't mind me asking?

ok bunker the type is a chinese 56 and you get all that for a meesly $250 bucks. Q i would assume so on the likes of the tapco polymer mags file to fit, but its really easy its just a matter of touch up on the duck bill side. but i have the metal hicaps as well and has not had any fit problems. i took a old rifle and making her desirable you gotta love it. tavor??? who needs it when you got an sks bullpup.haha

Only bullpup I ever owned was a M17S. Good luck with yours...curious to see the finished product!

If I ever was to contemplate a SKS bullpup conversion (not likely), I'd probably look into Larry Gilmore's stuff...more my look, sort of speak. He's come a long way. Are you familiar with his work? Here's a Chinese Type 56 he did for a satisfied customer...AUG style, Cherry wood with Ebony stain. Quite a long waiting period from what I heard. Also attached is some of his work.
