Should I buy a Ruger 10/22 takedown?

For game mammals, 22LR is not allowed unless you are hunting with dogs. The dogs will have to hold down the game while the hunter delivers a fatal point blank shot using a 22LR.  Without dogs, you'll need to hunt with a 223 minimum rifle caliber according to DLNR.

It's even bigger for pistol caliber. The ammo cartridge has to be at least 2" long meaning it will have to be .38 special, .357 magnum or larger.

I don't think you are allowed to shoot mongoose at all since it is not a game animal. I think it should be though as they are pests, but it's not what the law says.

You'll need a shotgun for birds.
I think, therefore I am armed.

I don't think anyone is going to follow the law in a huge disaster or appocalypse. This is for pure survival in Hawaii. well that's what i would use if i had to go out to hunt with if i had only one gun to bring. my 308 would be nice but small game would be blown up and nothing left to eat. a 10/22 is pretty quiet too so not to attract so much attention. i dont see many flying birds so i'll just shoot the ones walking around like those storks or damn pidgeons and myna birds so no need shotgun. the ducks are friendly so just grabum by the neck. lol

Point taken.  But if SHTF for real, then God help us all!  I'm not sure a 22LR would be my first choice.

I was thinking a UTS-15 would also be great for SHTF. Yes it's a shotgun which I said before would not be good but this one is kinda hybrid. One side you have birdshot and the other side loaded with slugs. Not so great for really long distance but overall you can defend yourself from others while trying to hunt which a flip of a switch. You can still hunt small and big game.
