I can't believe this joke was incorporated into a Gilligan's Island documentary I watched on YT a couple days ago, so I thought I'd post it since it's fresh on my mind.
The documentary told the story involving Jim Backus (Thurston Howell III) and his real-life wife (not "Lovey)") vacationing in Italy.
Jim was signing a few autographs for kids while his wife got dressed for dinner. He looks up to see a drop-dead gorgeous Italian woman standing and staring at him.
Jim: Well, hello there. Do you want an autograph, too, young lady?Woman: No. I'm here to give YOU something. You can have all of this (pointing to herself). And it'll only cost you $100 American dollars.Obviously taken aback and not knowing the best way to decline the offer, Jim decided an insulting low-ball counter-offer seemed like a good tactic.
Jim: $100? That's a bit more than I think would be appropriate. Tell you what. How about $5? Do I pay now, or after we're in my room? The $5 offer did the trick. She left, but not before cursing loudly in Italian as she walked out of the hotel.
He thought nothing more about that woman until he was seated at dinner with his wife. As he looked up, the pro was standing over him with a condescending smirk. He had no idea what was going to happen, but I'm sure 100 scenarios raced through his mind all at once -- not one of them turning out good for him!
After she had his attention, the woman pointed to Mrs. Backus and said, "See what you get for $5!?" and walked away.
The wife sat there totally confused while her husband recovered from his shock and broke down into uncontrollable laughter!
