Family Owned Restaurants

What are some local family owned restaurants that you frequent or enjoy?

I’ve been wanting to have a bacon cheeseburger lately, so I made time to hit up W&M. I hadn’t been there in over 10 years and wasn’t sure if it was still there. I went to Fresh Catch (right across the street) on Sat and saw W&M was open, so I went today. Even on a Sun afternoon, was still quite busy.

Nothing super special about the food, but I enjoy it. What I really enjoy is the family ownership and serving aspect. When I was there, one of the owner’s daughter and grandson were there handing out. Reminded me of when I was younger and I’d hang out at an uncle’s business. Anyways, so go pick up my order and one of the owner’s family is at the window and has a certain level of service you don’t see at fast food places. I rarely eat fast food these days, but on the rare occasion that I do, I typically run into millennials or other part-time type servers that could care less if you are happy with your food. So not the case at W&M.

It's sad that so many of these Family run places have disappeared over time, but here are a few of my faves that I've hit for years and will continue to support them so they stay open.
Next time your playing tour guide for visiting relatives or friends, these are nice stops

Poi Factory just on the north outskirts of Kaneohe.
Authentic Hawaiian plates.  :worship:
Lovely squid Luau, Kalua pig and awesome Laulau's
Fresh poi (pounded before your very eyes).  :o

Waikane Store  Waikane
48-377 Kamehameha Hwy
Maki sushi, Korean fried chicken, musubis, boiled peanuts and shaved ice.
I like to grab a sushi roll and some chicken when I'm going to town but  missed breakfast.
Or I TDS on my way home if  I missed lunch in town.
Est  1898 but I've been going there since 1986.
True local hospitality, Awesome family.

Hukilau Cafe Laie
Just an all around corner diner with all the goods. Personal favorite ?
Fried Pork Chop, Fried rice and 2 OE

Kaya's Store Punalu'u
Bev and her family  are land owners from waaaaaaaay back.
Bumbuch Musubi is a handful for the road, but she also runs a kitchen there and usually have a daily  "Fresh Catch" plate and more.
Fried rice Loco Moco with 3 eggs.  :shaka:

Fiji Market in Kahuku
Awesome Lamb Curry w/ Roti and Chutney or NZ Meat pies. ;D
Market is also purveyors of lamb and duck on a regular basis

Kahuku Farmers Market
Kahuku
Serving the Veg heads and those like me who need a green boost from all that red meat.  :shake:
Situated across from "Romy's"(crap)  at the shrimp ponds, they deliver  fresh plates, pizza's and pannini's from produce grown on site. True "Farm to Table".

And of course, ya gotta have dessert. ::)
For me that indulgence is Ted's Bakery.
Partial to their signature  "Chocolate Macadaia Nut Pie" but will always grab the "Blueberry Cream Cheese" if available.
The Pineapple cake must weigh 8 lbs !

I like Tsukenjo's Lunch House in Kakaako. Their roast pork, laulau or beef stew mix.  Any two of the three works for me.
Happily living in Puna

I’ll have to check out some of those next time out out falavantibf that side. Ted’s is available in many markets now. Prob not as good as fresh from the one in Sunset, but I’m also not that big on desserts.

One of my good friends from college is the owner’s nephew. We used to hit up there all the time when we were home from college. Good way to fatten up while we were at home. Go lift at the Y and then hit up Young’s (old location).

I still go there from time to time. I like their breakfast! I like their roast pork as well. I used to like their meatloaf, but wasn’t was good as I remember last time I went.

For beef stew, I like Fresh Catch in Kaneohe. Haven’t tried from the Waialae location yet.

Been to DL a bunch of times. Not recently though. I used to date a chick that liked the off the menu hot stuff. Talk about fire. And I’m not talking about her...  ;D

Been looking for a good place for Filipino food. Sometimes I go to the one at 99 Ranch, but I’m down to try others. That the owner’s are forim members is

Yeah, dunno. I’m guessing the mention of all the good food distracted me.

And love Taniokas, but mostly for the okazuya than fish. Love their ahi patties, lumpia and many others.

Check out the old sports authority.  It's a market place with all kinds of mom and pop shops.  Retail and food/drinks.

My co-workers and I started this Yelp thing, where we would try to eat at all the hot spots.  We came across a place in Kalihi called Island Style BBQ.  The family that runs it are awesome and the food is Ono.  So instead of going to all these other places to eat, we always end up there!
