Very true but the problem with covid that throws us the curveball is that so many people get it and don't show symptoms. If ebola could spread unnoticed but maintained the same mortality rate I think it would be quite difficult to justify not doing such closures.
We got lucky with other previous pandemics which were more deadly but did not spread easily so it wasn't as big of a threat (Swine flu I think).
Let me ask you this though, lets say we had no closures of any businesses whatsoever, do you think we wouldn't still suffer financially to a significant degree? What I am getting at there is that I think we would still see huge drops in the economy due to people voluntarily not travelling, going out to certain activities, etc. Additionally I would expect we see financial loss from businesses not being able to function as a wave of infection goes through the company. Of course such a wave would be must shorter lived than the 10 months of shutdown but still we would see some loss. On top of that there is potential financial loss in terms of overwhelming the medical system though I think this would be harder to calculate since we would have to guess what the fatality rate would be if we didn't act.
Don't get me wrong, I think some of the regulations were downright silly but I think others were reasonable and justified.
What is your opinion on countries like Taiwan which clamped down very heavy in the beginning and now is back to normal (relatively speaking) whereas we and other countries clamped down less and keep struggling. The encroachment on rights was more extreme in Taiwan but for a shorter period of time.
When the government tells you to close or not make money, that's a problem. When they tell you u cannot have 1a and 2a rights because of covid, thats a problem. Only after lawsuits and many complaints were gun stores allowed to open and churches allowed to hold modified service. If no one complained, both would be closed.
I would expect a drop in travel and revenue, but not as huge as it is from march to now, if we didnt close off tourism. The BS 14 day quarantine has a trickle down effect too. I and many others didnt go to vegas because of the BS proclamations.
We average about 30k in tourist arrivals a day pre covid. March and on was about 1k a day. Now its about 11k avg a day.
Taiwan and other countries can do as they please. They do not have a 1a, 2a, or constitution like we do.
My first trip there, we were in a private car and passed thru a dui check point. Every driver had to blow to pass thru. Can hpd do that? Or do u need probable cause 1st? And out breathalizers suck. Theirs was just 1 hard blow, like blowing out 2 candles on a cake and done. Not the blow, keep blowing, almost there type of tech.
