Hi stegosaurus/Carlo. Hey did you take the Aug 15 handgun safety class at OGC tactical? I was in that class too. If you are that same guy, I think I know who you are, we talked briefly. Your hand had a blister/cut on it after the firing practice, but that was funny because I said I had observed you were the most accurate/skillful shooter out of all of us students. Meanwhile I was probably one of the worser guys but my hands were spotless.

I also remember that I had overheard that person had pre-purchased a Glock 19 Gen 4, so I suspect it is you! :D

Either way, I am new too, so hello to everyone here.

Hey Folks,

I have been on the island for less than a year and hope to get more trigger time.  I am a retired IPSC/IDPA/3 GUN Shooter from the mainland.  Kokohead is one of the most beautiful ranges I have ever shot at.  I especially liked the chicken and cats that frequent the facility.  I recently attend one of the shooting events on the action pistol side.  The members were nice enough to allow us to use our full kit during the match.  Look forward to posting on this awesome sight!

Haha, yes that was me! I remember talking to you, as well (never got your name). I finally got the Glock registered and in my hands last Monday. Took it to the range this past weekend. I wish you saw me shoot on the pistol side on Sunday. I think you would take back that "accurate/skillful" comment! Hahaha. Good fun, though.

Did you pick up any firearms yet?

Well, you always hit the big target at 50 yards even with the high caliber pistols, so that's one kind of skill: the ability/strength to handle recoil. I wouldn't be surprised if you found out you shot all over the place with your 9mm on a bullseye target at 25 yards because that's probably a different skill. But by the time I get out to shoot my first time, you'll probably be good at everything.

I'm probably going to be the last one from our class to get out to shoot. Although I knew little about firearms prior to that class, I decided to become picky afterwards so it is taking me time to find what I want. I have a new in box Sig P230SL shipping from the mainland right now. However, if the condition of it is too good when it arrives, I will just collect and not shoot it. So I need to buy a second Sig P230SL to shoot but they are hard to find. I'm also looking for a regular finish Sig P230.

I still have the $25 coupon at OGC Tactical to use up, though. They said we have 3 months to use it. If my internet-hunting patience runs out I can purchase something from them in the meantime, but I haven't decided what I want. Currently leaning towards the Sig P226.

Heavies - I like STI too, but I will never use it save a life.  Most of my "Open" guns were like top fuel dragsters which magnified your mistakes/skills.  STI's are also like needy girlfriends, because they require so much attention/maintenance.  LOL

Ah, that P230 sure is a handsome gun. I like the P226, also. Looking at that model as a possible second purchase. Did you shoot the Browning Hi-Power at the safety course? Some of the students hung around a bit after the class was officially over and the instructor let us shoot it. That was a fun little 9mm and I wouldn't mind owning it one day. After the class, I went from gun n00b to obsessed. Now I need all kinds of guns in my life.

Yeah, that P226 is a great choice, especially if you can still find the nice used ones. I've heard a lot of people recommending a 9mm/.40 over .380 for the price and availability of ammo, as well as power. Of course it's nice to have more choices :)

Howzit!  FNG here... go easy on me as I am somewhat a beginner to the hobby.  Live on the leeward side so getting out to the range is a PITA.  Counting the days till that Waipio or Ewa indoor ranges open up!  Anyway, did go through the handgun certs and a proud owner of a Glock 17 as well as a few other long guns.  This site is awesome, lots of good local info and seems to have lots of knowledgeable members as well.  Heard about this site via Twitter so keep spreading the word.

Aloha!

I'm new to both the forum and shooting sports, too, but welcome. I am also from the Leeward side so I feel your pain. And like you, I'm also an owner of a new 9mm Glock but mine is of the compact variety. No long guns for me yet, though.

stegosaurus, I didn't understand what you meant. Did you want me to buy that used P226 for you? I don't think you can buy guns for other people, not even online.

I'm sad now. My P230SL came in and looks great, but unfortunately it still gets stuck in the 14-day permit period. I was hoping online purchases would be exempt somehow but I guess not. I think I also have to pay Hawaii state tax on the entire gun as part of the FFL transfer fee. I'm not sure yet.

Also, I figured that I might as well pick up a 9mm to shoot right now at the same time, but OGC Tactical was out of stock of the normal version 9mm Sig P226. So it doesn't seem like I will get out to shoot anytime soon.

Thanks, now that i'm a little used to the 17, I kinda wish i got a 19.  I mean the 17 can only hold 10 rounds anyway!  Oh well, just something to get in the future!

Haha, sorry.. that was a bad joke. I meant buy it for yourself so I don't have to buy it because I don't have the money.

Bummers on your P230SL. As far as I know, there is ALWAYS a 2 week waiting period. And I think some FFLs will charge excise tax and others will just charge a flat rate.

So what's the verdict on the P230SL? Gonna shoot it or is it for your collection?

I also won't be able to shoot for a while. I have to send my slide back to Glock to get replaced. Gonna take 4 - 6 weeks. :( You should go to Koko Head this weekend for the National Hunting and Fishing Day. Bring some canned goods as donations and they will have handguns, shotguns, muzzle loaders, .22's and air rifles for us to shoot. I will be there on Sunday. http://2ahawaii.com/index.php?board=1.0

Maybe I'll stop by the event this Sunday. Depends what I feel like I guess. Right now I am sad because I am weaponless.

I'll almost certainly keep this P230SL unfired for at least a few months. But I'll eventually fire it if I'm unable to find another one in lesser condition like I hope to. I really like this gun so I hope to build a P230 army.

I would prefer to train with a regular 9mm handgun though, due to the much cheaper ammunition cost. The weaker .380 ammunition costs much more. I don't really want a Glock, but would consider other options besides the Sig P226. I did fire the Browning Hi-Power during class. I did well with it, but I had no problem handling any 9mm or lower caliber handgun. I don't think grip issues affect me. When stuff goes above 9mm or is double-action-only, then I have problems. I wouldn't say that the recoil of higher-powered rounds scares me, but my accuracy goes to crap with them, so I think I should stay away.

The bad gun gods decided to make OGC Tactical run out of the standard 9mm P226 right when I had made up my mind to buy it. Maybe that is my destiny.

The latest word from OGC is that they might not even make it by the end of next year. I haven't heard anything about Shooter Ready recently. The last they said was in the first half of 2011.

I'll probably PCS by the time any of these indoor ranges open up the island.  Does anybody know if the Schofield Rod and Gun Club is still active?  I heard they have a new president since the last one quit.  Any info would be appreciated please!

I think they are still active, but they mostly do skeet shooting on Wednesdays. My brother and I tried to join for rifle and pistol shooting, but would not be informed of times and dates of range openings.  I think they have a hard time securing range time, and also, RSO's for them to open ranges regularly.  My brother was kinda pissed because he payed the dues, but could never get any info on events.

Last I heard they are still at the skeet range every Wednesday. Try and check them out.

thanks.  It's such a challenge to get out to Kokohead these days for me.  On one outer island, where there are no ranges, shooters are told (by the state) that they can target practice in the mountains or far away from other people.  Anyone know of any place on oahu that people can shoot without getting HPD fired up?

Heavies - You are right!  A buddy of mine who used to post on FH (CAVGUY) used to be a member of the club and he told me the same thing.  I  wanted to shoot when OGC was out there but we were busy with work.  From talking to Range Control yesterday, it looks like they are just focusing on the using SR-5 for the shotgunners.  A couple of Range Control Bubu's told me that the SRGC leadership is mostly comprised of the shot gun fraternity who wants to keep the Skeet Range going only.  They are not concerned  with the pistol or rifle side.  Two of my soldier who had signed up for the club also wanted their money back for the lack of range time.  Yes it is true that they do not  have enough people who are willing to volunteer.  They only care about the skeet range and want to keep it that way.

Last month, I went out to their monthly meeting and stayed for a round of skeet.  As always I shot below my skills during the  first round.  Most of the fellas came up to us to give pointers.  I used to compete in Texas, but I never told them that. Once I turned it up, they stopped talking to me and it was uncomfortable for the rest of the rounds.  Man.... so much for good sportsmanship.
