When does a liar ever have a good intention? And masks? It doesn't take a genius to figure out that very well may be the reason why we are at high infection rates. There is no standard for masks. No procedure to educate the public on proper donning of them. Simple test. Put on your everyday mask and spray some cologne. Can you smell it? How often do you touch your face since wearing a mask? Do you wash your hands before you touch your face? How about after you take off your mask - do you throw it away and get a fresh sterile one?
When does a liar have a good intention? Dr Fauci's case would be a prime example. Protect the supply for the people who most need it (doctors, front line workers etc). I would have preferred an honest explanation but I also know that the honest explanation could have come with a run on masks by people who didn't need it.
Masks are not an all or nothing measure and people need to stop treating it like it is. If one guy dies with a seatbelt on does that prove seatbelts don't work? Of course not. If masks reduced the rate of spread by even 25% then the masks would still be having some effect. Masks are just one layer in an imperfect system to try and reduce the spread. Do we know exactly how effective masks are? No but we have data to show that there is reason to believe it does help some and it is minimally intrusive. Closing businesses , closing schools, requiring vaccines, is way more intrusive than saying we have to wear a piece of cloth over our faces.
The objections to not knowing how to put on masks seems a bit of a grasp to me. Obviously if I pick my nose then put my mask on my fingers could still spread the covid, this is not an argument against masks.
And yes they did release many videos showing people how to put masks on. And no, cologne would not be a good way to test if masks are effective, that just shows a lack of understanding. Masks that filter out particulates do not catch gaseous odors, you need special types of filters to do that. I wear a P100 (better than N95) mask when I woodwork and I still smell things.
