The kickbacks from the EV folks was too tempting?

I'm speculating of course.  Our leaders would never do that. ::)

In order to 'engineer' the behavior of US residents, the federal government uses the tax code as a carrot/stick weapon.

For hybrids and EVs, the tax incentives were huge.  Had the gov't not done that, it's doubtful anywhere near the number of EVs would have existed as much as they do today.

In this case, it becomes an "early adopter" assistance program.  Until the production numbers are high enough, everyone buying early is paying much more than they could later.  Economies of scale and fewer ramp-up production costs drive the prices down over time.  The tax breaks help make the cars affordable for the early buyers, and the inevitable price drops after the tax breaks end make them affordable for everyone.

Of course, affordable means different things to different people.

There is a LOCAL Company getting setup to recycle EV batteries!  Aloha!

I hope they can make it a sustainable business for our sake.
Call me a jaded old man but there have been so many failed attempts at green energy.
I will believe it when I see it.
Keep us informed of their progress.

Pretty broad brush you paint with. I deeply care about the environment and
want to practice good conservation. You do that with facts and data, that others can examine and test.
Even dogs won't shit in their beds.
I repudiate the politicized Bullshit that Greens produce as settled science.
I repudiate using "models" created by political zealots for making public policy.
I could go on but you get my drift.
As an aside only an idiot would buy a lifted truck.  If you need one( I do) just buy
a good 4WD put good tires on it and keep it stock.

You brought up many good points grov.
I also give a shit even though I will be dead and buried long before many of you.
The space program in the 1960's pretty much united the country with a goal that
was accomplished in just 6-7 years. It was truly a giant step for mankind. Many great
advancements came out of the space program. I don't see that happening with green
energy programs. I just see scam after scam and good money and resources wasted on a giant scale.
The malcontented are distracting and misleading us down a path toward ruin.

I believe that it is just crazy that a current production ICE will not last as long as one made in the
1990's. Our federal and local governments are hell bent on burying us in toxic waste and wasted
tax payer funds just to appear green.

In my opinion this EV crap is BS.  It's like they put the cart before the horse.  They pushed EV vehicles and there really wasn't any infrastructure in place to support it.

This is more evident on the mainland, where people typically drive longer distances.  In Hawaii all we do is drive in circles on a little rock in the middle of the pacific.

Now they are worried about the responsible disposal of an environmentally harmful product.  The damn batteries.  :grrr:

I think the ones responsible for this fiasco watched too many Field of Dreams movies.  Build it and they will come doesn't necessarily work.

Think Rail.

I find that the more "big box' stores one frequents, the more need they have for a vehicle with more cargo space than a Corolla trunk or LEAF hatchback.  Here, if you don't need a truck, you probably don't own a home or have a family to provide for.

Of course, there are new EV/Hybrid trucks and SUVs on the market now, so the argument about hauling capacity is losing traction.

I own
A Madza B4000  4WD.
A Explorer 4WD.
A Expedition 4WD.
A broken VW GOLF TDI ( 50 Mpg when it worked)

I have a "hobby" farm, and need to haul shit, tow things, and haul people around.
in places where you need traction. eg grass and rocky steep slopes.
All my 4WD have factory off road and tow packages.

Nearest Walmart and Home depot, or Costco is 50 to 60 miles away respectively.
EV doesn't work for people like me and it is irritating
that city people think they are all that exist.

Sincerely,
Green acres

I don't have a lot of money. All my 4 wd vehicles prices with new tires is less than
what I paid for the used VW. 21 years ago.  I fix things.
In my part of the BI 4WD crew cab diesels are what people buy.
Tundras are for Kona or Hilo people.

EVs do make sense in Hawaii.  Could go with half sized batteries here to make cars cheaper and lighter.  I have.a 330 mile range on my Tesla that goes to waste.

If the $10 billion spent on rail went into building a nuclear power plant instead, it'd be perfect
