Today the judge in Hunter's tax evasion case threw the DOJ and his defense team (redundant?) into a tizzy.
As the prosecution and defense both told the judge they came to a settlement agreement, the judge asked the prosecutor, "So, I don't see anything about amnesty for other charges. There's no agreement concerning FARA charges. Is it possible you may file additional charges in the future?" (paraphrased)
The prosecution had no choice but to say, "Yes, your honor," because without it being documented, the court can't enforce any other agreements made outside the plea agreement.
That's when the defense chimed in, "We don't agree to this plea deal, your honor."
LOL!
Obviously, the DOJ told his lawyers they would accept the tax misdemeanor, defer the gun charges for 6 months and it goes away, and promised (under the table) there would be no further charges.
Once the judge got it on the record that some charges were glaringly missing from the agreement making them fair game, it threw a monkey wrench in the backdoor deal.
I guess they found some creative way to sidestep the problem -- probably with some secret "get out of jail free" letter provided by the DOJ.
The plea deal went forward after that additional meeting.
But, hey, it's just Congress members who deserve to be called trashy.
