For those who don't know, the rail website says closed daily at 7pm. But from 7/1 and over the 4th holiday, it will close at 6. People were stranded cause they thought 7pm was closing. Then 1 car got stuck for 20 mins in Halawa. IDK if it was the station or mid line.
That's similar to park & ride and express busses I've encoutered on the mainland.  Where after-hours, the "regular" system is the primary.

When I worked in Seattle, the downtown business group/org/whatever subsidized bus passes.  My company paid for parking, but the passes were a better deal.  I was apprehensive at first, but I eventually got used to the bus system.  Plus combination of pooling with co-workers on other options, it was pretty good after I got used to it.  Their light rail opened after I moved back home.  I heard it works pretty well for folks going to the ballparks. . . if you can side step the homeless and druggie areas.

Personally, rail isn't a viable option, at least in current iteration since I don't live in the area it services.

I'll never ride it
I live kaimuki and rail doesn't go that far. plus I don't agree with how it all went down

these are my options:
1. rail, which is an inconvenience for me
2. supercharged Mustang
3. turrbocharged SUV

considering my options, 2 and 3 are much more convenient and much more fun too.  there's no good reason for me to take the rail

In a way, yes, it was free and in a true way, no, it was not free.  We all paid for it, whether we use it or not and sadly, we will continue to pay for it forever and ever, world without end, amen. :(

I actually got a card from Times Supermarket for $3. However at the transit station they were giving them away for free. There was a pretty girl standing in front of me that made the ride enjoyable.

I'd like a refund of all taxes paid for this failed project.

Too late to do anything now. The best chance to stop the rail would have been to elect someone else as mayor 10 years ago. "Hindsight is 20-20"
quote:
---
On January 19, 2012, Cayetano came out of retirement to run for the office of Honolulu Mayor.[3] Cayetano's stated focus in his mayoral campaign was greater transparency in local government, but its core was ending the Honolulu Rail Transit Project, a plan to build a 20-mile elevated steel on steel rail system in the city. In the primary election on August 11, 2012, he received more votes than either of his pro-rail primary opponents, Kirk Caldwell and Peter Carlisle. He did not achieve the majority required to win the election outright, and faced Caldwell in the general election on November 6.[4] Cayetano subsequently lost the mayoral election to Kirk Caldwell, in a vote that was widely viewed as a referendum on the rail project. He continued his opposition to the rail, in 2017 urging the Federal Transit Authority to terminate further funding for it. In an ad paid for by the Abigail Kapiolani Kawānanakoa Foundation, Cayetano asked President Donald Trump and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao to withhold $800 million for the project.[5]
---
Here is my opinion:
1- I currently have no use for the rail. BUT.....
2- I'm retired and getting older and there WILL come a day when I can't safely drive any more. (that includes ALL of you reading this)
3- The west side of Oahu is a rapidly growing area. It's dubbed the "Second City". Didn't you wonder why the thing started out in the middle of nowhere? Think 10-20 years from now.
4-There are probably people here on this forum who worked and fed their families from the rail project.
Our very own "Inspector" Dave worked on the rail. That's why he chose the name Inspector. It was his job.

to be continued...

I opposed the rail from the very beginning.  When it was just a thought.

And I voted for Cayetano for Mayor.  My last chance that me and people like me could stop it.  But no cigar.

And I agree.  Too late now.

And the rest is history.

To be fair, day 1 sucked, so I would say gotta give it a year to see the profit and loss. But, in the end, does it matter?  HI is committed to the rail and will just tax the people to cover any cost.  In poker, we call this "pot committed".  This means you've invested so much into the pot that you cannot fold, even though you know you should.

One thing that has never been discussed or made public is the estimated operating cost . . .

From a logical, financial perspective, that position (pot committed) is a fallacy.

The more sane and logical approach is to understand sunken costs.

Just because you spent a billion dollars on doesn't mean you must not abandon the project.  If the objectives are not being met, and the costs to complete and operate/maintain the rail are never covered without more taxes, then there's no reason to continue.  You have to focus on present and future costs versus benefits.

No matter what you do, you will never recoup or recover that initial outlay of cash and resources.  They are "SUNK" and will never return.  Some costs could be offset by selling trains and equipment as well as the land WE overpaid certain people for.

How does it make any sense to keep dumping money into a money-losing project just because you already dumped a bunch of money into it?  Cut your losses and make a mature, logical decision -- stop the bleeding.

Exactly.
Wasn't the purpose of the "Second City" to put jobs including C&C jobs out thereto alleviate traffic ?

I want reparations. There should have been a study of how this rail undermined opportunities for the minorities

There's only one minority here:  White people: 25.2%

Non-whites as a group have the clear majority
Asians: 37%
Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander:  10.3%
Hispanic or Latino:  11.1%
Black/African American:  2.2%

Mixed Race (2 or more):  24.7%
