the only difference now is media coverage and more emotion in the congressional branches.
they never stop their attack, but its generally ineffective in the absence of a galvanizing event.
Sounds kinda contradictory to me.
We have
had a galvanizing event --in fact a sequence of them.

Hey, I'm tired of all the pollyannas saying "this can't happen," "that won't happen," "we have the Constitution to protect us," "Obama will never get re-elected," "it'll get thrown out by SCOTUS," as I have seen here and on many other internet sites.
Hey, I saw all this before, in 1986 and '94, and in dozens of minor ways before and since then --even unto some blather from a major city hotshot mayor seriously suggesting that the size of soft drinks should be regulated.
The fact that this tyrannical mayor could even
suggest such a thing is clear evidence that those in power will do anything they can to exert power, more power, and still more power. This is just the tiniest, smallest incident, but it demonstrates the power-hunger of politicians in general.
A minor thing, but it shows that people with
some power will always want
more power.
That big city out east had a two-term limit for mayors, but that guy convinced the twerps and lackeys on the city council to make an exception and allowed him to run (after changing parties) again, and win, for a third term.
Another thing that illustrates is that weasel-wording lawyers can always find a way to circumvent the will of the people.
Take the case of that California farmer who had to destroy his own crops because of the wildest legalistic "interpretation" of the commerce clause. Ridiculous!
And the case in --what, Connecticut? --where the supreme court trampled on private property rights by claiming that the greater good would be served by allowing the municipality to condemn private property to build a shopping center, which would bring in more tax money for the city. Hence, they reasoned, it was ultimately "for the greater good," and fucked the landowners. Ridiculous!
You folks who think our so-called "protections" are valid are just throwing the rest of us under the bus with your pretty pink predictions. I fail to see how anyone can claim that President Obama is a passive bystander in this latest round of gun-control hysteria. Ridiculous!
We are in a long-term battle with dedicated, patient, power-grabbers, and fuff and fluff about how "this can't happen" is plain stupid in my mind. It's not like we haven't seen the same processes develop before in history.
It has happened.
It is happening.
And it will keep on happening.
Until we throw the bums out on their asses.

Ah, phew!
Dayam, that felt good.
