Seems like it would be near impossible to regulate, which doesn't seem to be something high on their priority list anyway, but if they can get away with it, more power to them.
Honestly, they can't get away with it.  The Supremacy Clause of the Constitution and all that.  Not to mention that there's Supreme Court precedent that literally everything affects interstate commerce.  The case I'm remembering is from the '30s, in which a farmer was told he was producing too much (I shit you not, that's what happened.  Atlas Shrugged, anyone?), and that he had to destroy some of his crops.  He told the feds to pack sand, because the extra food above the limit was for his family's use--it was never going to be sold.  And the Supreme Court-THE SUPREME COURT! ruled that if he grew his own food, he wouldn't need to buy other food, and that would affect interstate commerce, so the federal government was within its authority to force him to destroy it.  Yeah.  That blows my mind, but there it is.  The case was Wickard v. Filburn

Anyway, no, they can't get away with it, but it speaks to the attitude of the residents of those states regarding the federal government's various overreaches.  A symbolic gesture, if you will.

Here is an explanation of the use of executive authority from Newt Gingrich in the first part of this video. Seen it yesterday on Greta.

Here's another thought.

With all the threats concerning "Executive Order" and "bans," maybe they're just "massaging the meat" in order to pass legislation that we normally wouldn't accept?  For example, our reaction to whatever legislation they pass is, "Well, at least X didn't get banned/confiscated."  But that leads to my next question.  What are you willing to accept in replacement of a ban?  Would you accept legislation the makes the entire United States exactly like California, just as long as they don't approve another AWB?  Federal registration & fingerprinting, background checks and psych evaluations?  Annual permitting/fees?

I guess the question is, how much ground are we each willing to concede in exchange for a "promise" that X won't be banned?  Remember what I posted here?  Obviously, this little Obamacare "slip-in" helps our cause.  But though the NRA looks out for our best interests, this is proof that they are still a lobby group as well and show that they are willing to be, in a sense, "bought."  Of course, this is what we hope for, so long it benefits us.  While I believe that they will do their best fighting for our 2A rights, we still don't know what goes on behind closed doors and what deals are being made.

So...What ARE you willing to concede?

Here's another video with Michelle Malkin and it also includes Clinton pushing to ban hi-cap mags and assault weapons while speaking at the Consumers Electronics Show. Of course it wouldn't be complete without Clinton joining in and adding his lousy two cents.

Re: The bolded portion: Feck no.

What would I be willing to concede?  I'd be ok with universal background checks, as long as the check is limited to calling 1-800-UNCONSTITUTIONAL and asking, "Hey, is John Doe, last four of SSN xxxx cleared to buy a gun?", and the answer consists of a "Yes" or a "No", with no other information like make/model being transferred, etc ever being recorded anywhere.  That I would be ok with.

Wow...I'm not a lawyer but that doesn't seem legal. Just curious how a state can completely disregard a federal law. I can understand challenging a federal law in court like several states did with Obamacare but this is just complete disregard. They got balls...I like their boldness.
Well, actually, if you read Article 1 of the constitution it basically states that the Federal government is responsible for conducting foreign policy, signing treaties, waging wars, etc. Also for regulating inter-state commerce, and that everything else is up to the states. Because our states now accepts large amounts of money from the federal government to provide services to the state's citizens there is now an air of blackmail on the part of the feds. So the states abide by the federal laws but they certainly don't have to in most circumstances. But if they don't they stand to lose billions of dollars in funding for schools, highways, etc.

I could be wrong about some or all of this but this is my general understanding. JMHO.

Not close to being a scholar of this crap, and decades away from classes on it, but I think you are correct.

Perhaps more tellingly, the arguments I have seen from leftists trying to cut down secession arguments might back it up.  I.E. states like Texas that could do well on their own, mirrors just what you have said: that all those federal hog slop dollars would dry up and the now free state would come back begging for more.

They left truly thinks they have enslaved the states with the federal grant system.

the only difference now is media coverage and more emotion in the congressional branches.

they never stop their attack, but its generally ineffective in the absence of a galvanizing event.

Sounds kinda contradictory to me.

We have had a galvanizing event --in fact a sequence of them.

<rant>

Hey, I'm tired of all the pollyannas saying "this can't happen," "that won't happen," "we have the Constitution to protect us," "Obama will never get re-elected," "it'll get thrown out by SCOTUS," as I have seen here and on many other internet sites.

Hey, I saw all this before, in 1986 and '94, and in dozens of minor ways before and since then --even unto some blather from a major city hotshot mayor seriously suggesting that the size of soft drinks should be regulated.

The fact that this tyrannical mayor could even suggest such a thing is clear evidence that those in power will do anything they can to exert power, more power, and still more power.  This is just the tiniest, smallest incident, but it demonstrates the power-hunger of politicians in general.

A minor thing, but it shows  that people with some power will always want more power.

That big city out east had a two-term limit for mayors, but that guy convinced the twerps and lackeys on the city council to make an exception and allowed him to run (after changing parties) again, and win, for a third term.

Another thing that illustrates is that weasel-wording lawyers can always find a way to circumvent the will of the people.

Take the case of that California farmer who had to destroy his own crops because of the wildest legalistic "interpretation" of the commerce clause.  Ridiculous!

And the case in --what, Connecticut? --where the supreme court trampled on private property rights by claiming that the greater good would be  served by allowing the municipality to condemn private property to build a shopping center, which would bring in more tax money for the city.  Hence, they reasoned, it was ultimately "for the greater good," and fucked the landowners.  Ridiculous!

You folks who think our so-called "protections" are valid are just throwing the rest of us under the bus with your pretty pink predictions.  I fail to see how anyone can claim that President Obama is a passive bystander in this latest round of gun-control hysteria.  Ridiculous!

We are in a long-term battle with dedicated, patient, power-grabbers, and fuff and fluff about how "this can't happen" is plain stupid in my mind.  It's not like we haven't seen the same processes develop before in history.

It has happened.

It is happening.

And it will keep on happening.

Until we throw the bums out on their asses.

</rant>

Ah, phew!

Dayam, that felt good.

I do believe that the radical and crazy notion that the Founders meant what they said, is gradually soaking through the judicial system.

Folks, would you really expect the Senator from ILLINOIS to be anything but anti-gun while representing the majority of his constituency in Chicago?

I defended Dan Inouye the same on other forums from folks who thought he was too liberal: he was representing one of the most liberal states in the union!

Obama is simply not the anti-gun activist that he is sometimes painted to be. If he was you would see much more explicit support for crap like Feinstein's bill.

That said, the anti-gun activists reside firmly in Obama's group of supporters and if the political climate indeed turns anti-gun enough to pass further control legislation he'll sign it with no complaint. The man has MUCH bigger fish trying to fry him than to expend much (or any) political capital on highly controversial gun legislation.

And that said... he has far less control over this kind of thing than it would seem so his personal take on things is largely irrelevant. If the economy gets worse (and it looks like it will) and people continue to crack (and it looks like they will) - just one or two more heinous crimes would tilt the sheeple into accepting further gun rights restrictions. And those who are all about disarming any potentially restless natives will be well pleased.
