Ehh, I should've proofread, I was thinking of those retired LE guys and the out of state LE in the news articles.....nvm I shouldn't try to post stuff while at work

Auriiite I got a mission objective.

I'll make it easy. Honolulu hasn't issued a concealed carry permit in many many many years. Security guards can carry under an open carry permit that us normal people can't get and federal officers carry under LEOSA. KK would probably only give you a Jennings anyway :P

Law enforcement definitely DO NOT get issued a CCW. Where do you get your information?
They're exempted from needing a CCW to carry a firearm. Why would there be a need to issue a CCW to them?

Also, if you can give me one legitimate example of a Honolulu issued CCW with proof, I'll give you a free gun.

I'll take you up on that....my choice or yours?

From the 2006 AG's Annual report

Quote
Licenses to Carry Firearms
Hawaii’s county police departments also process license applications for the open and/or concealed
carry of firearms in public. Statewide in 2006, 227 employees of private security firms were issued
carry licenses, and two (0.9%) were rejected. One private citizen in Kauai County applied for a
concealed carry license and was approved at the sole discretion of the police chief.

From the 2001 AG's Annual Report

Quote
The county police departments also process license applications for the open and/or concealed
carry of firearms in public. During 2001, 242 employees of security firms were issued carry
licenses and 14 were rejected for cause. Ten private citizens also applied for a carry license; at
the discretion of the respective county police chiefs, two applicants were approved and eight were
denied.

All info can be verified via the AG website.

What do I win??

To clarify the question on whther Hawaii is a "retreat" or "Castle" state: Both

The law requires that you retreat, if it can be done in complete safety, unless you are in your home. In your home, there is no duty to retreat.

Absolutely nothing.

All of your examples are not HONOLULU issued concealed carry permits.

They are (open) "carry" permits, which any two bit security guard can get, or permits issued in other counties, not Honolulu.

Greetings to the group. I'm just and old fart that has been shooting since I was about 7yrs. old.
I grew up on Maui and used to go bird hunting. Experience includes:
Smallbore rifle competition, skeet, action pistol. I do reload most common calibers and still cast pistol bullets when I run low.

Hello

I'm on Oahu, I'm 25yrs old and the only experience I have with firearms are at the ranges in Waikiki, lol.

I don't have any firearms yet but I'll be able to pick up my long gun permit next week and I'm taking my hand gun safety class this Sunday.

So far what I have in mind to purchase is a Beretta 92FS or Px4, Sig P229 or 220, or a 1911(don't know which brand).

All in either .40S&W or .45ACP minus the 92fs because I think that only goes up to 9mm.
I've been told to stay away from the 1911 platform since I'm a noob, but I'll get one eventually.

As far as long guns go I want a Remington 870 or a AR15 and a M4 carbine.

All this is laughable since I really don't know much and I'm just making my own wish list but I'm here to learn and soak up everything I can and make a few friends down the way.

What's wrong with a 1911 for a noob?  That was the first handgun I had purchased.  ;D
1911's still going strong for 101 years, still nothing at all wrong with them. Heehee.

The 1911 platform is more complicated to assemble / disassemble than a polymer pistol and tends to be less forgiving to shoot (jams if not gripped properly).  It's also more expensive than a Glock / XD unless you look at something like the Rock Island Armory 1911.  Secondly, a box of .45 caliber bullets are a lot more expensive than the 9mm -- as a "newbie", you might consider how much 2000 practice rounds would cost between the 9mm vs the 45 cal. Lastly, the .45 will have a lot more recoil so if you're just starting out, you'll really need to watch out that you don't develop a bad twitch habit from firing 45 calibers. Its not a sure thing though, yes you can overcome a recoil twitch with practice and good fundamentals / discipline.

As a second thought, you might want to consider getting a .22 handgun to go with the .45.  The .22 cal is cheap and easy to shoot.  If you find yourself shooting poorly with the 45 at the range, you can switch to the 22 and practice the fundamentals again before going back to the 45.

Oh yeah.... Welcome to the boards!
I think, therefore I am armed.

Thank you, that might be the reason I was told to stay away from the 1911 platform. You reminded me about the price, I totally forgot to add that to my post and that's actually one of my deciding factors.

As far as the ammo goes I never thought to think of the pricing. But the main reason behind the .40S&W size and no .22 is the defense factor.
I've always been interested in guns and I planned to get into it as a hobby but something I witnessed earlier this year (not at all involved ) made me switch my mentality from just a hobby to self defense for myself and my family. I never realized exactly how messed up people can be until unnecessary BS unfolded on my street.

I wanted a 92FS initially but read some stuff about the stopping power of the 9mm. Tried and true I still want a little more power but not as much as a .44 or .45 since my grip and technique is pretty much non existent. The only problem is I've never shot a .40S&W before, I've done .22LR, 9mm, .357 magnum, .44magnum, and .45

I'm not opposed to getting a 9mm though. I'm sure it'll be fine if I ever had to use it (I pray I'd never have to use it defensively) within my home in the event of a robber/killer/whatever this is just my logic. How is it so far? lol

Try look into a .38 special or .357. Great guns. Easy to shoot. For me was more comfortable then shooting a .45 and way less recoil. Just another option. I'm planning to pick one up for my sister.  Revolvers easier for her to manipulate.

Welcome from another fairly new member and congratulations on escaping California.  Strange as it may seem, firearms laws here are not nearly as insane.
